    ________

Stories are intertwined within the heart of each generation.  Even science fiction and reports that

    may be "way out there."

One might start as a spark that shoots across our imagination or a seed found along the path

    leading to a new experience.

To me, all stories are a continuing

    conversation with ourselves.

This tale was written in a play-like structure.

    It’s ok not to settle.

              s.y.

    Farmland - Night:

A violent storm lashes the countryside.

    Title:  1880 Missouri Frontier

Lightning splits the blackness revealing a rough-cut dwelling that stands alone against the fury.

    Thunder explodes.

    Farmhouse  Bedroom - Night:

Kane Monroe, 17, sleeps fitfully.  He twitches and mumbles incoherent phrases.

His sweat-soaked nightshirt reveals a solid frame.

Scars mark his hands and arms.

Lightning strikes nearby, causing his body to spasm then goes limp.

A slight smile emerges.  He knows where he’s going.

    Queen Julia’s Chambers - Day:

    Title:  1200 A.D.

A cool breeze pushes back long shear drapes.

The marble-like space is clean and devoid of possessions, with a terrace open to the countryside.

As Sir William, Kane finds himself under silk sheets with Queen Julia, who lies comfortably on top.

They tenderly kiss as sunlight streams from a higher world.

        Julia

      Feels good - always has.

Long curls frame her soft brown eyes and delicate smile.

        William

      Will you?

Their eyes lock as a deep exchange pierces them.

        Julia

      I recall asking first.

A sword clangs.  The sheet flaps.  She's gone.

    Forest Trail - Day:

William wears light battle gear and staggers bloody and exhausted.  He shouts to the Queen's carriage.

        William

      Julia, send the coach!

A quick check confirms his knights and coachman have fallen during the ambush.

Fog lowers through the pines as ten additional mercenaries advance with a war cry.

        Julia

        (shouts back)

      Ride out!  Go!

William lifts his sword and slashes the nearest foe.

A stout Luther, 20, spurs his horse and circles behind William.

        Julia

      William!

Luther leaps and strikes William to the ground.

The young knight tries to move as blood pulsates from his mouth.

        Julia

      Dear God -

William lifts his eyes only to see Luther rip Julia from the carriage and throw her to the muddy ground like so much garbage.

William's voice falters.  An anguished breath sprays blood over his face.

Luther throws aside his helmet and stands over his sister.

        Julia

      I should have known.

        Luther

      Such an oversight.

        Julia

Have I not given you everything?!

        Luther

      Almost, my dear.

        Julia

Father's death was you, wasn't it?!

        Luther

      The realm would not survive.

        Julia

      William!

        Luther

Shout all you like.  Things would be well had you stepped down when ordered!

Luther flicks blood from his face onto the Queen.

        Luther

The terrible things you make me do.

        Julia

      Father was right about you.

        Luther

Yes, he mentioned a visionary would emerge.

Luther raises his sword as William screeches his vocal cords.

        William

Stop - it's me you want!

William watches as Luther wields his blade - then chops off Julia's head.

William cries and struggles to get up, but Luther advances and kicks him in the face.

        Luther

How does knighthood feel, Sir William?

William reaches for his sword, but Luther stomps his wrist.

        Luther

      Feels good - doesn't it?

        William

      In hell -

        Luther

Hope she was pleasing - certainly was for me.

Luther drops his sword, snatches William’s off the ground, and plays with it.

        Luther

Oh, I feel your power.  Don’t be so damn proud.

Luther rams the sword through William’s stomach, pinning him to the ground.

        Luther

      Your KING!

William cries while Luther retrieves his blade from the mud.

        Luther

You, Sir William, have not been loyal.

Luther swings down with all his might.

    Kane’s Room - Night:

Kane rolls off the bed and crashes to the floor as lightning and thunder explode.

His chest heaves as bitter tears flow.

In the corner, Kane sees Luther's faint image wrapped in thin strips of dark cloth, mummy-like, with a sword at his side.

    His eyes follow Kane.

    Parent’s Bedroom - Night:

Carl and Anna, 40, sit up and listen to their son's grief - not the first time.

Carl rubs his weathered face as new leaks drips hit the floor.

        Anna

      Should I go?

        Carl

      No.

Another lightning strike sends a quiver through Anna.  She rubs her belly, then takes hold of Carl's hand.

Her bright complexion and refined features go unnoticed, hacking out an existence on the edge of civility.

        Anna

      Carl?

        Carl

      He can defeat this.

        Anna

It's more than red fever - isn't it?

    Carl lowers his head.

        Anna

      It's time you tell me.

        Carl

      Anna -

        Anna

There will be consequences.  You won't like ‘em.

        Carl

Winning his trust hasn't been easy.  You know that.

        Anna

      Are these nightmares the same?

    Carl shakes his head.

        Anna

      No, what?

        Carl

He relives several lives over and over - with the same opponent.

        Anna

      The devil?

        Carl

      In some form.

        Anna

      Are we in them?

        Carl

Anna, he knows things about us we don't even know.  He's not normal; you knew that while carrying him.  When it comes to live or die --

    Carl falls silent.

        Anna

I will not lose our boy.

Carl covers his face and prays.

    Monroe Farm - Morning:

Vapor rises from carved-out fields as Kane plows beside rows of bent corn.  He wobbles, yet his face shows resolve.

        Kane

      Steady.  Steady.

Pablo, his plow horse, cuts a line as Kane drops wheat into the earth.

Sam, his trusted black retriever, keeps pace, eager to be with Kane under any condition.

        Kane

      Almost there, Sam.

Exhausted, Kane reaches the end of the field.
