    Introduction

Perception is defined as the process by which an individual selects, organizes, and interprets stimuli into a meaningful and coherent picture of the world. A stimulus is any unit of input to any of the five senses. Examples of stimuli (i.e. sensory input) include memes, products, packages, brand names, advertisements and commercials, i.e. all the different outlets of influence. Sensory receptors are the human organs (the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin) that receive sensory inputs. Their sensory functions are see, hear, smell, taste and touch or feel. All of these functions are called into play--either singly or in combination--in the evaluation and use of all stimuli. The study of perception is largely the study of what we subconsciously add to or subtract from raw sensory inputs to produce our own private picture of the world.

We are threefold beings; body, spirit and soul. God gave each one of us five senses wherewith we contact our earthly home. What we see, hear, taste, smell or feel differs even as our fingerprints differ. Add to that the colossal baggage of life experiences each of us enters with, into a specific situation. This is the very reason why we have different opinions, or can even question someone else’s perception or opinion of the exact same matter. You might ‘see’ something in a specific way, while the next person will have a totally different perception of it.

Then we have the spirit realm which also has five senses; reasoning, imagination, memory, conscience and affection. The spirit realm is inside the body or physical realm. On the inside of the spirit we have the soul. The soul is the nature of the spirit. The nature refers to the essential qualities or characteristics by which something is recognized. It is the very essence of everything.

All three realms are intimately involved during our interactions with both the natural and the supernatural encounters in our lives. The soul controls the spirit and the spirit controls the flesh or body.

I have chosen the next three Scriptures, whereupon to build the thought of ‘Perception’ and ‘The World of Illusions’.

    John 14:19, 25

19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

25 The woman saith unto him, I know [knowledge implied] that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

Hebrews 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Ezekiel 44:23 And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.

Both discern and perceive means to detect with the senses or to become aware of through the senses. In these three Scripture portions, perception (or discernment) is inseparably linked to prior knowledge, prior use or prior experience. Perception and discernment are synonymous to each other. The only way to perceive anything properly, is by having prior knowledge or experience. Your prior knowledge or experience acts as a sounding board to interpret each. After people have been taught, then only can they discern or perceive correctly, as quoted in the above Scriptures. Discernment and knowledge are thus inseparably connected.

Oftentimes, in conversation, people would respond, saying: "I see or I understand or I know exactly what you mean". Is this really the case? Do they really see the way you see? Do they really understand what you are trying to convey? Do they really know exactly what you mean?

I really don’t think so! This is just a common response which people habitually adopt as a means of socializing. In the chapter on transactional analysis, we will call these responses, or action-reaction instances, strokes.

If you would take these people aside and ask each one, individually, what their interpretation was about what was said, each one will have his or her own viewpoint, interpretation or perception of what was said. It all comes down to their individual life experiences. This is what perception entails. This will be the angle of approach to the topic of perception in this book.

We live in a world where it is not always what meets the eye, or any of the other senses, that is real, but it is how we perceive it.

Look at the picture on the title page of this book. Do you see a saxophone player or the face of a woman? The one you recognize first, is what determines your perception. This will conjure the associated thoughts, experiences, knowledge, etc. which you had prior to it. You cannot see both at the same time, although you might think so.

In this picture you either see an old woman or a young woman, but never both at the same time. What do you see? Do you see both or just one?

Hint: The eye of the old woman forms the ear of the young woman looking away from you.

We live in a world of illusions – different perceptions of the same thing. Have we ever seen the next person or do we only know the physical manifestation or expression of that person? The physical manifestation is not the real person, but merely the earthly reflection of the real person: the real person is spirit. We are spirits communicating with each other and we rely on the outer or physical expressions to determine what message the spirit on the inside received or sent. It is an action-reaction scenario.

Two people can sit in the same room, listening to the same presentation, at the same time, and yet they will leave the room having experienced the content that was presented, totally different. The manner in which our senses respond to the different stimuli, together with our previous knowledge and experiences, determine how we will perceive the speaker and his presentation. We can either see ourselves as an eagle or a crow, a snake or a dove, good or evil, etc. It depends on prior experience of the subject or the situation at hand.

It is only by the true infilling of the Holy Ghost that we can be in one mind and in one accord. This is where the thought in this book leads to – having the Mind of Christ.

By reason of our day to day interactions with our surroundings, we build a reference frame or a paradigm. Reference frames are used to specify the relative relationship between an observer or partaker and the phenomenon or phenomena under observation. This frame of reference is then used to perceive subsequent comparable situations relative to the known phenomenon as, for example, being good or evil, right or wrong, the same or different, as mentioned earlier.

We filter anything thrown at us against existing knowledge of it or of comparable previous experiences. In our Christian walk, this previous knowledge of current experiences, is ascribed to our election-knowledge from before the foundation of the world, when we were in the conference with God. It is our election, our representation in God before the foundation of the world, which will determine our decision-making actions in this life.

Our previous knowledge as elected children of God, goes back to where we were a thought in the mind of Elohim. We might not know it now, because we have amnesia, an amnesia caused by the fall in Genesis 3. But, God who is rich in mercy, brings us into remembrance by the preaching of the Word in Power which, in turn, restores our minds to the Truth: the mind of Christ. We bypassed our Word-body, or Theophany, and were born into sinful flesh. Our Theophany knows all things. Jesus Christ was born with His Theophany, because He is the Word made flesh, and thus knew all things.

1 Peter 1:25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

By the preaching of the cross, we get a restored, sound mind, wisdom to perceive or discern every spirit, the times, and the seasons by having the mind of Christ in us.

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

1 Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

The mind of Christ searches the deep things of God, and knows all things, because it discerns spiritually. We then know, even as we are known and we know that we come from God and we are going back to Him. When the mind of Christ comes in, then equality with Him comes in. The Bride then becomes the final voice to the final age.

    1 Corinthians 2:10-15

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

By recognizing your day, its messenger and its Message and faith in the inspired preaching of the five-fold ministry Ephesians 4:11 coupled with the infilling of the Holy Ghost Ephesians 4:30, we as born-again, Spirit-filled Children of God, are led by the Spirit of God to know all things.

It is the Spirit that leads and guides us into all Truth. You do not need any misleading human perceptions and interpretations, but the Holy Ghost teaches you. It is imperative that the scripture below, is not misconstrued, misinterpreted or dislocated.

1 John 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
