About this ebook

Is it his fault the Alpha Mate couldn’t take a joke?

After pissing off the Alpha’s mate, Kia gets sent on a crap job—check on Madge, the crazy werewolf living near the Pack lands. Kia has no love for the nutty wolf who makes silver bullets designed to kill other werewolves. He’d just as soon see the bastard gone.

Until he meets him. The half-crazy wolf is sexy and shy and Kia wants nothing more than to fall into an adult puppy pile with the guy.

Madge just wants to be left alone. If the kids from the local Pack would stop harassing him, he’d be perfect, except he’s pretty sure the silver he works with every day is slowly killing him. The one thing he doesn’t need is a gorgeous Beta wolf stalking his property under the guise of helping him. And maybe finding out the truth.

    Chapter One

Kia leaned back, kicked his heels onto the couch, cracked open a beer and sighed. It had been a long-assed couple of weeks. He’d worked every night for the past month at The Distant Howl, filling in for Rowan while he got his feet on the ground as Alpha.

Between working nights and spending days training with the other new Betas in the Pack—plus freakin’ guard shifts—he was done.

They’d finally hired a bit of help at the bar—three young wolves from the Pack. With them fully trained, that afternoon Kia announced to the world he was taking the night off.

He wasn’t shifting his ass off this couch for the next four or five hours.

He picked up the remote and clicked on the massive flat screen they’d installed. Living in the Alpha’s house had some perks.

A re-run of Supernatural filled the screen. Oh yeah. Kia squirmed and got comfortable. Hot sexy men looking for crazy-ass bad guys.

    What the fuck?

Kia barely reacted to the Alpha Mate’s shout, glancing toward the kitchen door then dismissing the sound. If he needed to worry, Craigh would come find him.

He didn’t have long to wait. Seconds later Craigh stomped into the living room, holding a white-ish, gray-ish tube sock between the tips of his fingers.

What is your scuzzy, nasty sock doing on the kitchen counter? Craigh groused.

Hey, that’s where it went to. I was missing one.

Craigh flipped the offending material into Kia’s face.

Kia flinched and slapped it away. Hey.

Now you know how the rest of us feel. You’re a werewolf. Not a pig.

Kia shrugged and slouched deeper into the couch cushions. Well, not all of us are as lucky as Rowan to have a pretty little mate to pick up after us.

A low growl rumbled through Craigh’s throat. "I’m not his little anything."

That’s no shit, Kia thought. For being an Omega wolf, Craigh was freakin’ huge, almost as big as Rowan. Not nearly as dominant but not a wimp either. Kia liked to needle the guy a bit, just for fun.

Awww. Is the little wifey getting his feelings hurt?

You asshole. The growled words revealed Craigh’s canine teeth—sharp, big and not quite fitting in his mouth. The pissed-off Alpha Mate appeared on the verge of shifting. Kia pursed his lips and sent a smooching kiss into the air.

Red flashed in Craigh’s eyes and his fingers curled into fists. Kia blinked. And waited.

A frustrated growl rumbled from the Omega’s throat. Craigh whipped around and stormed out of the room, his feet echoing as he pounded up the stairs.

Kia chuckled and took another long draw from his beer. The door upstairs slammed shut and the shouting began.

Damn, Craigh is easy to fuck with.

Kia blocked out the background noise and concentrated on Dean Winchester, preferring him over the prettier Sam. He liked his men big and mean. He didn’t go for the pretty ones or guys he thought he might crush when they fucked.

He didn’t get to enjoy the peace for long.

Feet sounded once again on the stairs, only this time, they headed downward and with the distinctive thud of an angry Alpha.

What the fuck, man? Rowan smacked Kia on the back of the head hard enough to sting.

Kia ignored the blow and looked up at his friend. That’s the second time in less than five minutes someone has asked me that.

Yeah, seriously. Do you have to say things you know will piss off my mate?

Is it my fault he can’t take a joke?

Yeah, it kind of is. And since you pissed off my mate, you get to do a little job for me.

It’s my first night off in a month, Kia protested, the sound coming out with more whine than he would have liked. Animal instinct demanded he swing his feet to the ground and stand up to show respect for his Alpha. He fought the urge with every fiber of his being. Hell, Rowan had been a friend, a Lone Wolf like Kia, until he’d killed the previous Alpha and taken over the Pack.

I was sympathetic until you pissed off my mate. Now, I’m going to stay here and calm Craigh down enough so you can sleep without the threat of your throat being sliced open. You’re going on a little trip.

Kia sighed, the sound dramatically different from the satisfied noise he’d made when he’d first stretched out. Hell, he wasn’t getting out of this. If he pushed too hard, Rowan would go full Alpha on his ass and it wouldn’t be pretty for any of them.

He sat up and plopped his feet on the floor. He leaned over and snagged his riding boots. Where am I going? He tugged the leather boots on.

I need you to go check on Madge.

Kia jumped to standing. No way. I’m not going near that crazy bastard.

Rowan didn’t speak. He folded his arms on his chest and stared down Kia.

Why do you want to check on that asshole at all?

Some kids have been hassling him, throwing rocks at his cabin, tipping over his silver pots. That kind of thing.

    Good.

Rowan’s glower got deeper and Kia recognized the weight of the Alpha’s power. He dropped his gaze, looking down long enough for Rowan to accept he wasn’t challenging the stronger wolf. The moment passed and Kia raised his eyes.

It’s been pretty consistent harassment, Rowan continued, ignoring the tense moment. And I haven’t heard from him in a few days.

That’s good, right? Kia didn’t want to hear from the bastard ever.

It would be good news, except I’m afraid he’s taken matters into his own hands. I don’t want him going after some Pack teenagers because he’s in a pissy mood. Assure him I’m working on figuring out who is doing it and he’s got to be patient.

Kia scoffed. He didn’t know the other wolf well—hell, at all—but from the two times they’d met, Madge didn’t radiate patience. He screamed crazy reclusive bastard.

How about this? Kia offered. "You go check on Madge and I stay here and apologize to Craigh. Hell, I’ll even cook him dinner."

I already cooked dinner and no. You pissed me off so you get the shit job. Deal with it.

Kia pulled himself up to his full height, nearly six-two and a hint shorter than Rowan. When did you become such an asshole?

I’ve always been an asshole. Rowan smiled. It’s just now, you have to listen to me.

Kia shook his head. I never should have agreed to join this freakin’ Pack, he muttered.

Like I gave you much choice. Rowan laughed. He held up one finger. Speaking of dinner. Wait. With that command, he spun around and hurried into the kitchen, returning seconds later with a medium sized plastic container. Give this to Madge.

He shoved the Tupperware into Kia’s hands.

What? You’re feeding the little shit now?

Just take it. It was Rowan’s time to sigh and Kia got a strange bit of satisfaction from the noise. At least he wasn’t the only one irritated with the evening now.

Wow. Who knew you’d turn out to be so nurturing? It must be because of your pretty little mate.

Rowan snarled. Kia decided now would be a good time for a strategic retreat. He grinned as he stepped back, grabbed his jacket off the hook and raced out the front door.

The crisp fall air rushed against his skin and incited a brisk shiver. His cock perked up, craving any sort of sensation.

With Kia suddenly a Beta in the Pack, his fuck buddies had all but disappeared. They liked getting their asses pounded by a Lone Wolf but as soon as he became the Alpha’s second, they stopped coming in.

He hadn’t had anything more than a hand job in the past four weeks. Hmm, maybe I’ll make a run by The Distant Howl after I check on the crazy bastard and see who’s around.

Except if he went to the bar, he’d end up working. Even if they didn’t ask him to work, he’d spend the time monitoring the new guys, making sure they didn’t screw up.

    Still, it
