Chapter One: About the Author
Dicey’s Song
by Cynthia Voigt was a highly successful novel. It was an instant success when it was first published. The book received the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children’s literature in the year 1983.
Cynthia Voigt, the author of the present novel, was the second child in the family of six. She was brought up in a well off family. Her parents could afford to send her to an exclusive private school in Wellesley, Massachusetts, near her family home in Boston.
She had a very happy childhood. The only thing that marred her happiness was her competition with her older sister who was perhaps more graceful than Voigt.
When she was studying in the ninth grade, she began to pursue publication of her writing. However, her dream could only be fulfilled after many years. She had an illusion that if her script got rejected by a publisher, the script was not fit to be published.
She majored in English at Smith College. She lived for one year in New York City. She got married and then moved to New Mexico. She began to teach there. She did not want to become a teacher at first, but with the passage of time she fell in love with teaching.
From New Mexico, Voigt and her husband moved to Annapolis, Maryland. She taught at public and private schools there. Shortly after the birth of their daughter, she and her husband divorced.
Six years after getting divorce, she got married again. When she was pregnant with her son, she began to devote more time to her writing. She was inspired by the young adult literature that she used to teach at middle school to her students.
She wrote her first manuscript. When she found that her daughter was reading that manuscript with deep interest, she sensed that something had worked in her writing. She got inspired.
Her novel Homecoming
was rejected by several agents and many publishers. However, after its publication it proved to be a highly successful work. It won the Newbery Medal for its sequel, "Dicey’s Song.’
She was soon famous and successful. She began to enjoy her success. During an interview, she said that she saw both her family and her teaching as playing a great role in her life as a writer.
In her Newbery Medal acceptance speech, Voigt said that she believed that young people are much tougher than most adults imagine.
She told The Washington Post that young people can easily handle realistic books which deal with difficult situations. She said that her books appeal to the young people only because the characters in her books are very successfully able to negotiate the dangers that they face in the adult world without taking the help from the adults.
Voigt respects both her readers and the characters in her books. However, she says that her word is not the final word as to the evaluation and complete understanding of
