Chapter 1: A Beautiful Day
It was a typical summer afternoon on a Friday in mid-June. The skies were a deep blue, there was a slight cool breeze in the air, and the birds were happily chirping. Princess Yaa Santima was enjoying a wonderful day at Lincoln Elementary school in the town of Riverdale, West Virginia. Mrs. Blanket, her 35-year-old newly-married teacher, had been her usual stern but loving self. She taught them math, which was not Princess Yaa’s favorite subject. She just couldn’t get long division at all!
The only thing that got her through math class was that it was followed by English class. Today, they were asked to complete exercises in their English Comprehension textbook, which Princess Yaa loved. Ever since she was a child, she loved to read and write. The English class was followed by social studies and geography. In Geography, the class reviewed the fifty states in America. Florida was Princess Yaa’s favorite state because of Disney World. Her parents had promised to take her to Disney World next year. She was anxiously looking forward
