Surviving Romeos and Juliets

About this ebook
Surviving Romeos and Juliets is a very funny play to watch and to perform.
Jakob’s mother is putting pressure on him, too much pressure. He needs to finish his Shakespeare assignment in record time to get her off of his back. He turns to the internet for help, but that help comes at a cost, a loud and somewhat confusing cost.
In the tradition of Shakespeare’s comedies, there is chaos on stage as characters dress up in clothes that change their gender.
The play has seven characters and only one set, making it easy to produce on a small stage.
This play is recommended for high school drama productions because it allows teenagers, who love to perform, the opportunity to entertain an audience and make them laugh out loud a lot.

I was born in Cincinnati and grew up in the American Mid-West. I graduated from the University of Notre Dame and received a Masters in Education from the University of Cincinnati. I became a teacher and found a job teaching English and Film and Television at Trinity Bay State High School in Cairns, Australia. As a teacher I wrote many One Act Plays that students enjoyed performing in. I became the Rugby coach at the school and began writing novels that my students could read, relate to and understand. I decided to publish the novels under the name of Teen Friendly Books. At present I have 15 written and 10 published. My plan is to write many more books for teens to read and enjoy.

ACT I
SCENE 1
A fifteen year old boy sits at a computer in
his room. He is very involved in what is happening
on the screen.
The room is a mess. Clothes are scattered
on the floor, on the bed and even some
hanging from door knobs, from shelves and
from posters on the wall.
JAKOB
Take that, and that, and that! Where are you?
Where are you? Who's that? Ahhh! I didn't see
you there!
(His mother, a woman of 35, walks into the
room as he continues to play his game.)
MOTHER
Jakob, we have to talk.
(Jakob ignores her and continues to play his
game.)
MOTHER
Jakob! Stop playing your silly game. We have
to talk.
(Jakob continues to ignore his mother.)
MOTHER
Jakob, for the third time, stop playing your
game. We have to talk.
JAKOB
But I'm in the middle of combat. I can't stop.
MOTHER
Yes you can, and you will.
JAKOB
But...
MOTHER
There are no buts. Stop playing and talk to me.
JAKOB
After this game.
MOTHER
(Getting angry)
NO! Now!
JAKOB
Oh, alright.
(Jakob turns away from the screen and
looks at his mother.)
JAKOB
What do you want?
MOTHER
First of all, I need to sit down.
(She looks around)
There used to be a bed in here. What
did you do with it?
JAKOB
I sold it on ebay to buy three more games.
MOTHER
I can almost believe that.
(She walks around to the biggest pile in the
room, picks up some items from the pile and
throws them on the floor and sits on the
bed.)
JAKOB
Ah, mum, now look what you’ve done!
MOTHER
Made your room neater?
JAKOB
Nah.
MOTHER
Found your bed.?
JAKOB
No! You messed
