      Nothing to give...

      I have nothing for you. I am tired. I am sore. I lean back into my chair, my eyes closing in quiet thought. I have come so far, but I have nothing.

      The fire I have lit crackles in the hearth. The heat bathes me in its radiance. I am warm on the outside, but my insides feel cold. Lights dance behind my closed lids ushering me into the soft embrace of sleep. I resist as best I can. I do not like the cold darkness of sleep's silence.

      I think on my past. I review my days one after another in slow succession. I do have things to give, strength, compassion, understanding, time, a little money. I
