ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
To Maite Alegre, my friend, my partner and my soul-mate, thank you for putting up with me despite the hardship I’ve put you through and for continuing to love me even through the times when I couldn’t love you back, because I didn’t know how. You restored my faith in humanity and gave me the courage to trust again. Without your support this book would not have been written and without your unfailing belief in me I could never have endured the hardship I have experienced, to lead others towards what I have discovered.
To my mother, Natividad Lopez, thank you for loving me even in your absence from this Earth.
To Maria Garcia Mendez, my second mother, thank you for taking on the impossible task of bringing me up when my mother had died; for always being here and for never shying away, even through the darkest moments of my life.
To my father, Derek Dean, thank you for teaching me the importance of being true to yourself even at the cost of disappointing others.
To my siblings: Linda, Raquel, Miguel and Gustavo thank you for being my allies and teachers, each in your own unique way.
To my children, Daniel, Manuela and Shade, thank you for constantly reminding me of how much more I have yet to learn.
To my clients, Mike Jennings, Timon Colegrove, Patrick Knopp, Paul Jenks, Mark Salisbury, Nusrat Shah, Jayne Woodley, Peter O’Connell, David Hawkins, Richard Tawn, Jon Gibson, Jason Fielder, Mike Haigh, Graeme Monk, Dawn Farrell, Roger Davies, Matt Plant, Stuart Webster, Nathan Cantell, Joseph Taylor, Richard Bailey, John Platts, and many others, thank you for allowing me to coach you towards becoming the best leaders you can be.
To Lesley Hart, thank you for achieving the impossible task of communicating my work to the world in design and brand.
To Jennifer Manson, thank you for capturing my message and bringing it to the page so that it can go out to a wider audience than I can reach in person.
And to countless others who have connected with me along my journey and helped me to become the leader I am today, thank you.

Afterword
About the author
Foreword
by Jennifer Manson
The world is changing. We have more freedom, more choice, more possibilities than the generations before us; and we have more advanced technology to bring those possibilities into reality.
The world is getting smaller as we can reach more people with greater ease; and as it gets smaller it gets more personal, people expect a greater level of connection. We can hide behind convention if we choose, but increasingly people aren’t fooled, and they aren’t interested if they can’t see the real us.
There is still part of the business world that denies this, that continues to operate on the old rules, that continues to believe business is not personal. A growing contingent, however, have recognised how the wind is blowing. They see the change that is coming, that is here, and they are changing along with it.
In a way they are happier. This new way of being fits them better. Perhaps you are one of them. The difficulty is, knowing how to operate when you are changing faster than your environment is changing. How do you incorporate these new behaviours and beliefs into the old structure? Whom can you talk to about these things?
When I first met Carlos, I recognised with relief someone who was leading the way, guiding the new breed of business leaders through the transition into this new world. We need him, and partly so we can identify each other.
Carlos Dean’s leadership philosophy, embodied in this book and in his leadership programme, provides a blueprint to redefine professionalism, to redefine how we interact with each other and the people we lead; and to redefine connection within the world of business. Connection is essential, and not yet the norm. This book guides us through integrating that essential element into our day-to-day (working) lives.
I foresee this book will become a code of sorts – a symbol. When you spot a copy on the desk of another business owner, manager or aspirational employee, you will know you have common ground; you will know you can begin an uncommon conversation with that person and – at least partially – be understood. When you see this book, you will recognise a space of safety within which you can speak.
My belief is, over time – and not too much time – this will become the norm. In the meantime, I am grateful to Carlos, and others like him, who take the risk, take the leap, create themselves as vulnerable in their early speaking of this new truth, and lead the way for the rest of us to follow. The new world is a world of vision, purpose, insight, connection. In Carlos’ words, a world of community and unity, extending beyond the arena of business to encompass the globe.
It has been a privilege to work on this book with Carlos, to take his message and bring it to the page. His message is not one of facts and information; it is about shaping an evolutionary change of mind. At times, the content is almost hypnotic. It washes over and through, clearing out previous thoughts. This is part of his magic, moving us from where we have been, a place
