INTRODUCING THE RBI

Hidden away on a small island off the East Coast of the United States is Ripley High—a unique school for children who possess extraordinary talents.

Located in the former home of Robert Ripley—creator of the world-famous Ripley’s Believe It or Not!—the school takes students who all share a secret. This elite group operates from a hi-tech underground base hidden deep beneath the school. Prologue

Isn’t it beautiful, Riki? Aimi asked, as she watched the sun sink lower over the North Pacific Ocean.

It would be better if that mist cleared, said Riki. He had been so pleased with his idea to take Aimi to see the sunset, hoping she would find it really romantic. Now the two of them were sitting in his car and a sea mist had appeared out of nowhere, hiding the setting sun behind it.

But don’t you think it’s amazing, the way the sun is so bright that it’s burning through all that horrible mist? asked Aimi. It’s like a glowing ruby, smoldering its way through an enchanted smog.

Riki frowned at his girlfriend’s poetic description and looked carefully, trying to see what she meant; he did see a glowing ruby, two of them in fact. Twin spheres of red light were blazing through the mist, and they seemed to be moving.

I don’t think that’s the sun, he said, peering ahead to make out the source of the lights. They were too close
