    Introduction and Finding a Problem

    The cactus plant goes back a long way as far as humans are concerned, as much as 9000 years! I suspect it's much longer that the plants were around before people found uses for them. Did you know that the cactus plant is edible! Indeed, since it stores water so well it can be a lifesaver in an emergency situation.

    Its food uses don't stop there! You can make wine from the cactus, and cook and eat the flesh of the plant. You've likely heard of the Agave plant, from which sweeteners are made. Even textiles and paper can be made from the cactus! A wonder of nature at survival, the cactus grows in many inhospitable desert areas in the world and it numbers well over 2000 species.

    My cactus was bought at a big box store. The name is not important. I don't even recall the name of the cactus! (You can tell how little I knew about cacti when I got mine!) I think it cost a dollar and it was tiny when I got it, only a few inches high, in a small pot that fit in the palm of my hand.
