FLAMIN’ WEEDS!

A few years ago we purchased a flame weeder. It works well in its intended role to knock down weed seedlings in places like vege gardens, and when preparing seed beds.

Soon I wondered if it could do other jobs beyond its designed role. We have a driveway, and the few metres of connection from road to gate was laid down in asphalt and stone chip as per council stipulation as part of the subdivision consent. We have since put in a gravel driveway using a range of small stone sizes that locked together well and produced a solid surface.

GOAL: A WEED-FREE DRIVEWAY

My wife, who would prefer a nice and neat approach to gardening, is very patient with my relaxed yet exuberant approach, where nature is allowed to takes its course. She does however want a driveway that is clean and weed-free – a problem, since ‘happy wife, happy life’ is a slogan that has more than a grain of truth to it.

So I wondered if this flame weeder species), evening primrose and wild carrot had made their homes, drilling through the apparently solid driveway. And more general annuals and drought-tolerant plants had made their home there too.
