What follows are my journal entries from June 29, 1996 until September 21, 1997. The book is a gift from a lost love. What is reprinted here is 90% of the things I wrote in my journal. The task is for me to see how the journal writing lead to poems. See how the scribblings lead to ideas which lead to themes which become poems. I was told early in my career to write every day, no matter what it is just write. I have done so through 8 volumes now, this is volume 4. The italicized words are my thoughts and not poems.

Derrick Williams

I was born in Victoria, Texas in the year 1971. In 1975, my Mom and I moved to Austin, Texas. I moved every year from 1984 until my graduation from high school in 1990. I entered the delayed entry program for the United States Navy in 1989, attending boot camp in Orlando Florida in June of 1990. During my 20 year career, I was stationed on 6 ships and 2 shore duty locations. I was the second in my family to serve for a career in the military.I have a Bachelors of Science from Park University in Management, and a Master of Public Administration from American Military University. I am an American political/military history buff. My favorite place in America is Chicago, Illinois. I currently live in Dallas, Texas

First Entry

As I sit in the humming silence only a ship can produce

I contemplate what first words will be written

What poems will first grace the pages?

Where will my mind journey?

Which of me will speak in this volume, in this chapter?

Who will dominate?

The old man, the madman, Evil Willy, the Predator, or me

Volumes of urgent poems lay ahead

Scribbled on napkins, tapped out on scraps of paper, some will find their way into this book.

What will I/ we discover?

What truths shall I uncover?

Dear Reader

Listen… Look… Learn

I have an eternity to know your soul.

Well it is the 4th of July and the past couple of days I have been thinking about … How I feel about her. How much I love her. Is it right? Last night I dreamt she sent back all the letters I had written to her. Today I am unnecessarily preoccupied with the taking and ulterior sex. Interesting word choice. One can have ulterior motives but can one have ulterior sex?

I miss her too much

Love her too deeply.

Street Corner

He sits on the street corner

A wheel chair bound monolith

Begging for change

I munch on a dollar whopper no pickles no onions

He holds a sign that says

Homeless veteran …Anything helps

I sit at the stop light pondering worldly things

Baseball, washing the car… Did I remember to pay the gas bill?

The light changes

The cars move along, he waves at each

Perhaps seeking acknowledgement… to say hello…to bless us?

One by one we all roll by pretending not to notice.

Favorite Subject

Love is perhaps my favorite subject

Maybe the maker of the greatest rhyme of all time

I write of love it seems all the time
