    It started with a kiss.

    There. I said it. I kissed Dane, Dane kissed me. I’m not really sure who made the first move, but we were like two human magnets pulling closer and closer to one another, resisting like crazing, until there was nothing either of us could do about it.

    I didn’t think I’d ever be able to come out and tell anyone else that I’d kissed Dane, or that he’d kissed me, or that I’d had feelings for him or any other boy. All that stuff was supposed to be locked away in a mental safe, but even that wasn’t important at first. When it happened, too much was going on inside me to think about whether or not I would tell anyone.

    But I’m talking about it now. I guess this is what the brainiacs call ‘progress’.

    Here’s how it happened: Dane and I were sitting around on the couch in my basement, which was cluttered with shit. Like guitars and amps and drums and stuff. Anyway, I was farting around with my guitar and Dane was twirling his drumsticks while we waited for our bassist, Jimmy, to show up. We’d had a band going since tenth grade, so that made for two years. No one got death metal like me and Dane, which was why we’d formed the band in the first place.

    Dane loved Slayer and Tom Araya was his hero. That made me think Dane was really my kind of guy. Oh yeah, Jimmy got death metal, too, but it was different with him. Don’t ask me why. It just was.

    Anyway, we were sitting on the couch and I started looking at him the way I’d been looking at him ever since we’d formed Blazing Inferno. I’d started very carefully, of course. I didn’t want to be caught. I’d look at him mostly when
