About this ebook

Surviving University: An Introduction to Post-Secondary Education, Aidan Sisk's inaugural publication, takes a look at life in university. With the goal of preparing new students for the journey that is university, Aidan reflects on his own experience in university to provide helpful advice and knowledge to help students along the way. From offering study tricks, to tips on managing a job while in school, Surviving University is a basic, yet enlightening and informative, guide to post-secondary education. Knowing that students will have their share of stale, boring textbooks to read while in university, Aidan offers advice in a casual way, making preparing for university that much easier. There's often little guidance for students entering university for the first time. Fortunately, Surviving University is here to help.

    Introduction

I’ll be the first to say it: I was not an outstanding student during my time as an undergraduate in university. However, I did, for the most part, try my best at all times. I attended class regularly (absent only from the odd early morning class when I slept through my alarm clock), I always handed assignments in on time, and I studied as hard as I could for each midterm and final exam in all of the classes throughout my four and a half years in university. I was dedicated to my schoolwork. As a result, sometimes I did well, other times, not so much.

If I were to be compared to other students, I could be found somewhere in the middle. I was far from graduating at the top of my class, but I was just as far from being at the bottom. I was really just another average student. I definitely excelled in certain classes, while in others, I just did okay, or sometimes even poorly. But this is something I was, and still am, okay with. Of course I was never happy to get a poor grade, but I also never let it ruin my day, semester, or even life as many students do. Life goes on, and one grade, no matter how important in a class, never kept me down longer than it ever should. I would always strive to do my best, and having completed my undergraduate degree, I am generally content with how things turned out for me.

This book is not meant to be a compendium of knowledge with the purpose of leading you to graduate at the top of your class, for I am in no position to provide such guidance. Rather, it is a general guide that offers basic tips and information to help you understand what you will be getting into in university, and perhaps to help you succeed while attending post-secondary school. The information I will provide throughout this book is meant to serve as a base with which you build upon. Whether you will be attending university for the first time in the near future, or already have a couple of years under your belt, this book will help you prepare for the road ahead, knowing what to expect and how to deal with key issues as they arise during your schooling. It might also help you improve on certain aspects of your schooling (e.g., trying different strategies for studying). When you reach certain points in your education, I hope this book will have prepared you, or least given you an idea of what to expect when you arrive there. The unknown can be
