    A Story by

Ahhh! Mrs. Randolph cried over the cheers of Happy New Year in the hallway.

Her husband’s not going to be happy, Noreen muttered as nineteen fifty-six turned into nineteen fifty-seven.

John shot the nurse a quick glance and understood her concern, but at the moment he was a little busy. You’re doing fine, Mrs. Randolph. I need you to push again.

Twenty minutes later and still no baby, and she’d been pushing for over an hour. The tyke hadn’t been in any hurry to arrive and John wasn’t about to rush it. Sometimes it was like that. But while other doctors drugged their patients during birthing, John believed in keeping them awake. He’d discovered the mothers were happier that way, too. Although at the moment, Mrs. Randolph might not agree with that.

He cradled the head as it crowned. Great job. This is it. I have its head. One more push.

Her face turned red and the cords on her neck popped, but that last push worked. Offering encouragement to the mother, John guided the infant as it emerged into the world.

It’s a boy, he said over the baby’s cries.

Oh, thank God, Mrs. Randolph sobbed.

John placed the infant on the mother’s towel-covered stomach and clamped the cord. He wrapped the infant.

Tears ran down her cheeks as she tentatively touched her son.
