During the course of her research into some of South Carolina's classic tales, Nancy Roberts heard accounts of happenings in the recent past and even the present day. They're all here: from the famous Gray Man of Pawleys Island who warns of coming storms to the ghost of the poor fellow whose small plane went down in the 1950s near Walhalla leaving him to forever hitchhike Highway 107.

Nancy Roberts is an award-winning translator of novels by contemporary Arab authors, including Ghada Samman, Salwa Bakr, Ibrahim Nasrallah, Laila Aljohani, and Ahlem Mosteghanemi. Her most recent translation is The Slave Yards by Najwa Bin Shatwan, Syracuse University Press, 2020, while her translation of Ibrahim Nasrallah’s Gaza Weddings shared the 2018 Sheikh Hamad Award for translation.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Nice collection of ghost stories from South Carolina. From ghost dogs to an apparition of a Civil War general and his horse appearing in tree tops. A haunted lighthouse with the lady in blue and several haunted houses. Many of the stories are from the author's own perspective as she has been to or interviewed the person/people in question.
