    Chapter 1

Rays of sun beamed in through the windows. The soothing sounds of the ride comforted Misty. She listened to the sounds of the horses’ feet clomping in the grass, the creaking of the carriage’s wheels, and the tweeting of the song birds. Sweet sounds and smells invaded her senses. What music the birds made. The smell of flowers enveloped her nose. Misty smiled to herself as she swayed to the rhythm of the forest.

After her father, Arthur Reginald’s, death Misty was married to a Governor. They were to go to a new place and start a home. Her husband went ahead of her, and she followed a few weeks after. All of this was so exciting Misty could hardly contain herself. There were many parts of the land that hadn’t been explored yet. Now, she was the one on the road to discovery.

She wondered what her new home would be like. What were the flowers and animals like? What were the people like? Were there witches like her? Would Priscilla follow her?

Misty stopped smiling when she thought of Priscilla. On the day of her mother, Caroline’s, hanging Misty discovered that an old enemy was still alive. That enemy was Priscilla. She was a nasty, terrible yet beautiful witch. Before Misty was born Priscilla had killed her grandparents and a cousin Caroline was fond of named Josephine. Priscilla then proceeded to eat parts of Josephine.

The feud didn’t stop there, however. When Misty was old enough to fight with her powers, she briefly joined Caroline in a battle against the dreaded Priscilla. With the help of another much older witch, they fought Priscilla and thought they were rid of her. Then on the morning of Caroline’s death she reappeared, seemingly unharmed. However, Misty hadn’t had any further encounters since then.

There was no time to worry about that now. Surely Priscilla wouldn’t follow Misty all the way out here. Misty cleared her mind and relaxed again. She took in the sights and smells. When she reached the end of her long journey Misty was almost sad. She enjoyed being among the trees and the animals; but also wanted to spend some time with her husband the governor.

Unfortunately Misty knew very little about her husband. She had married him as a promise to her father. Arthur’s dying wish was for Misty to marry the new governor, who was wealthy. He wanted to make sure she’d be taken care of. So, she did as she was told. Misty abandoned her place as the town doctor, a responsibility her mother once had, and moved to the new area of the land with the governor.

The governor was quite a bit older than Misty. His name was Bruce Strouse. He was a very stern man. Nonetheless, Misty would make do with him. After all, he wasn’t bad looking. He was always immaculate with brownish, gray hair that kept it short and neat. Sometimes he reminded Misty of her father. His face was always clean shaven. His eyes were hazel. They were so beautiful to look at; Misty would hardly notice the harsh look in them. His physique was slim and strong. Lastly his appearance was always well kempt. Only the finest fabrics were used in his wardrobe, and he expected the same for Misty.

As the carriage pulled up to the new place Misty couldn’t believe her eyes. This place wasn’t a mansion like her previous residence. It was more like a castle. Misty giggled out loud. Castle Strouse, she thought to herself. The castle was hidden among the trees in the forest. Misty was a little disappointed because she expected there to be a town nearby, but it was a new area after all.

The actual building itself was amazing. It was made of dark stone. There were turrets and everything. Misty hardly had any time to take it in. As soon as they pulled up the driver jumped down and snatched open the carriage door. Quickly, madam, he said, The governor is expecting you.

Misty leaped out of the carriage, gathered up her skirts, and ran for the door. Someone was waiting there to open it for her. When the door opened Misty continued to run. She looked all around when she entered the castle. Everything was so beautiful. Before she knew it she had bumped into Bruce.

He grabbed her by her shoulders. You don’t run. It’s very unlady like, he said crossly. He glared at her for a moment before lightly pushing her back. Then he looked at her appearance. Misty’s light brown hair was a mess on top of her head. Her skirts were all wrinkled and folded. Her face was flushed from running. She also had sweat coming from her brow.

Bruce stared at her some more before speaking. Look at yourself, he scolded. Misty looked down at her dress. Then she looked back at her husband and smiled. I am a mess aren’t I, she said flirtatiously. Bruce was not amused. He pointed to the stairs. Go upstairs and fix it, now! he demanded. Misty pouted as she walked to the stairs.

Before she got to them Misty turned and said, But I don’t know where my room is. Bruce sighed and groaned. Where are the maids, he yelled. The sound of his voice made Misty jump. Almost immediately two maids came sprinting. Stop running! Bruce shouted. The maids slid to a halt. Sorry, Sir, they said simultaneously.

Bruce rolled his eyes and stomped away. Is everyone in this house a child? he asked out loud to no one in particular. Misty watched him as he walked away. Then she turned to the maids. They both looked terrified. It’ll be alright, Misty said. They looked at her but they didn’t seem convinced. This way, one of them said. Misty followed them up the stairs and down two hallways. Eventually, they came to a large, white door.

This is your room, ma’am, one of the maids said. Thank you, Misty replied, By the way, what are your names? The maids looked at each other before answering. My name is Victoria, the first one said. And I’m Sophie, the other said. Victoria had wheat blonde hair. Her eyes were gray. Her waist was tiny but she was busty. She reminded Misty a lot of Mary Anne, a woman that was a maid in her father’s house. For years Misty’s mother thought her father was in love with Mary Anne, but in the end, that was not the case.

Sophie had very black hair. Her eyes were dark, as well. She was also very voluptuous. Then Misty noticed that their clothes were tight fitting and very low cut. Is this was Bruce made them wear? Then she wondered if all the maids were so buxom. Well, thanks again, Misty said. The ladies curtsied then left.

If Bruce liked tight and low cut, then that’s what he was going to get. Misty would’ve tried anything to get his attention. For some reason he didn’t seem to like her very much. As a matter of fact, he didn’t seem to like anyone. Misty searched her wardrobe until she found a pretty, blue dress. It was tight in the waist and low cut at the bust line. Perfect. She stopped for a minute to get a quick look at her room.

It was even bigger than what she had at her father’s house. It was similar, which means it had the usual wardrobe, chest of drawers, vanity, canopy bed, fireplace, a couch, and chairs. The only thing it was missing was a bookshelf. Misty decided she would have to ask Bruce about that.

After a quick look around, Misty speedily changed her clothes. She overheard Bruce say he was planning to have guests for dinner. It wouldn’t do for the lady of the house to be late. She was done in record time. Just a dab of perfume and she was finished.

As she walked to the dining hall Misty admired the elaborate decorations in the hallways. There were many different paintings, statues, flowers, and tables. She loved art, and this castle was full of it. She had just made it down the stairs when she bumped into Bruce again. Don’t you ever look where you’re going? he asked annoyed. Misty put her hands behind her back and smiled. Maybe I just like bumping into you, she said coquettishly. Then she batted her eyelashes. Bruce raised an eyebrow, but he didn’t smile back. He eyed her bust line. Come we have guests to tend to, he said before walking away. Misty lowered her head in disappointment before following behind him. She thought for sure she had him, for a moment at least.

The dinner was spectacular. Misty rarely had dinner guests when she lived with her parents. They were so private, especially her mother. It was mainly because she was a witch. Misty quickly put those thoughts out of her mind. There was no time to think about witches. She had more important things to worry about.

When dinner was over and the guests left, Misty followed her husband to the parlor. She remembered how her parents would go to the parlor every night. They would spend hours talking and just enjoying each other’s company. They got to the parlor when Bruce stopped and turned to face her. Where do you think you’re going? he asked rudely. Misty pointed to the parlor door and said, In there with you. Bruce shook his head. No, no, he said, This is my alone time. Misty put her hands on her hips. "So when are we going to spend time together? she asked. Bruce opened the door and stepped into the room. In bed", he replied. Then he slammed the door in her face. The force was so hard Misty’s hair flew into her face.

What was she doing wrong? No matter what she did Bruce just didn’t seem to like her. There was no reason to keep worrying about it now. They had the rest of their lives ahead of them. Misty turned and retreated to her room.

Before going to bed she took out her mother’s magic mirror. It was used to change her mother’s hair color, so the town’s people wouldn’t know she was a witch. The town’s people believe that any woman with red hair was witch. So, Caroline would change her hair color every morning with her magic mirror. Before Caroline died she tried breaking the mirror. Misty saw it shatter on the top of her mother’s vanity. However, when she went to Caroline’s room a few days later, the mirror was fine.

Misty never looked into the mirror. Instead she kept it wrapped up and hidden. She took the mirror and put it in her vanity with her other trinkets. Bruce bought her lots of nice things. He just didn’t show her any affection. They hadn’t even had sex yet. As soon as they were married, Bruce left immediately afterward. When she went to sleep all Misty could think about was how to get through to Bruce. Of course, she would try again the next day.

    Chapter 2

Misty looked all over the large castle, as much as she could without getting lost, but she couldn’t find Bruce. She saw Victoria in one hallway. Have you seen my husband? Misty asked. Victoria nodded. He’s gone out and will be back later, she replied. Misty frowned. Thank you, she said.

Bruce left without telling her. He does not respect me one bit, she thought. That was it. Misty was through trying to please him. She decided not to try so hard anymore. What was the point? He didn’t care about her at all, and she didn’t love him anyway.

Well, without Bruce around Misty could spend the rest of the day to herself. There was so much to explore inside the castle. Then when there was no more to see inside, there was always outside. Misty went up and down hall after hall, stair case after stair case. The place seemed like it was never ending.

Along the way Misty saw so many servants. She tried introducing herself but they all seemed too afraid to talk to her. She was glad when she came to an empty hallway. It was awkward being around people that wouldn’t talk to her. Misty stopped to look at each painting. She was halfway down the hall when she noticed some movement ahead. When she got a closer look Misty saw it was a servant. He looked different than the others. First of all his skin was brown. It wasn’t extremely dark but it was noticeably different. He was also a lot taller than most men she had seen. His muscles were very big, even more so
