They stopped at a light, and he turned to her. His face was grim.

“You underestimated Horizon from the beginning, and I let you,” he said. “If something had happened to you, I would have been responsible.”

He turned back to the road. “You’re not going to do something like this again. Not while I’m around.”

January stared at him, her heart thundering with a sudden, beautiful terror. This man who handled a gun as easily as a toothbrush, who could break a man’s nose without changing stride, who had seen and survived things that gave him nightmares... was the same man who could make her laugh with a sardonic lift of his eyebrow, who had stayed up nights reading to her when she was sick, who liked to sit behind her and brush her long hair slowly, over and over, as he watched her face in the mirror...

Chapter One

JANUARY STOOD IN FRONT of the mirror in the train station restroom, making unbecoming faces. She rolled her eyes around and around, making sure whatever eyelash or particle of dirt had lodged in her right eye was finally gone.

She washed her hands again. The hand dryer was so loud she didn't hear the restroom door open. When she looked up, there was a man standing at the sink next to her.

She gaped at him.

Sorry to disturb you, miss, the man said. He was tall and slightly balding, with a ruddy complexion. I'm the maintenance director. I just need to check when the restroom was last serviced.

Of course, January said. I'm done-I'll just get out of your way. She tried to move past him to the door, but he blocked her.

She looked up at him. Excuse me, please.

No harm done, the man said, taking her arm. But I must insist that you come with me.

January pulled away, and the man tightened his grip on her arm. You don't want to do that, miss. He pulled her to him and opened his suit jacket. Inside it was the dull glint of a gun.

Terror pierced her.

You'll want to stay calm, be quiet, and come with me. We already have your friend-he's not coming for you. If you so much as make a noise, you're both going to be very sorry.

January's pulse was racing, but she willed herself to stay calm.

The man looked around, still holding her arm. He pulled her to the window at the back wall of the little room and pushed it open.

Climb up, he told her. And don't do anything stupid like try to run. You won't get very far.

January steeled herself and did as she was told.

ASH STUDIED his own knuckles, gripping the steering wheel of January's car. The gun muzzle against his neck jabbed at him.

Now, the man with the gun said. Tell me who you are and what you and the girl are doing here.

Ash didn't say anything.

Not much of a talker, are you? Well, no problem. We can get acquainted later.

Ash slanted his eyes toward the voice. The man gave up his questioning easily. He either had no authority or thought he didn't, which amounted to the same thing.

Nice and slow, the man said, take your hands off the wheel and put them out in front of you.

He showed Ash a length of wire.

Ash felt the pressure of the gun at his neck-weak and inconsistent. He pictured the back seat in his mind. January, normally a neat person, was a slob when it came to her car. The man would likely be balancing on a pile of shoe boxes, ancient takeout containers and plastic bags full of clothing that never seemed to arrive at their destination.

Ash ran through a few mental images, took a deep breath, counted one... two ... three...

And then pushed at the back of the seat exactly the way January had told him not to.
