    Chapter One

It was quiet at this time of the day. Parked on the third floor they could hear the sound of the traffic far down below in Parliament Street. The third floor was reserved for the business owners in the complex, those going out for lunch had already left.

Lewis was sitting in the driver’s seat, this was his first robbery and he was getting nervous. But times were hard and taking those diamonds from the elderly Jeweler would be like taking candy from a kid. He did not like the idea of being involved in a murder though.

Here he comes. slowly his partner moves to the back of the car. Checks the silencer on his gun and takes aim."

A short stout elderly man was walking briskly towards them and his car. He was dark haired and wore glasses. The briefcase was clenched in his right hand. As he reaches his car, the jeweler stops, he seems frozen in his tracks as he looks around. Some sixth sense must have alerted him. The shot when it hit him was unexpected. He knew that the possibility of a robbery was always there. But he reasoned that should he be robbed they would grab the diamonds and run. The jeweler jerks and falls backward. Lewis drives forward and parks behind the dead man. His accomplice puts his gun in a holster under his jacket and runs forward, looks around, opens the boot and with Lewis lifts him into the boot.

You shot him right in the forehead. Look at the small little hole. Oh!

Where the jeweler had fallen down the cement was covered with blood and brain.

Have you got the diamonds Lewis? he asks while closing the boot.

Yes, let’s go, before someone comes.

Keep calm, A young girl walks pass, glances at them, and then carries on to her car.

That was close. Come let’s get going.

Leaving the parking garage, they drove through the heavy traffic towards their destination, which was situated on the outskirts of the city. Once clear of the traffic they soon reached the house. They turned into the driveway leading to the house and Lewis jumps out to open the gate. After the car had been driven through, he closes the gate and gets into the car. The double garage doors were left open so they drove in and parked next to the ski boat.

You panic too soon Lewis. he says getting out of the driver’s seat and moving through the garage towards the door leading to his house. We will get rid of him as soon as possible. Tonight, when it is quiet we will take a ride in the boat and ditch him in the ocean.

    I need a drink.

Damn Lewis, are you starting again. I told you we’ll drink when the jobs done.

"The guy’s dead and you have the diamonds. Lewis reminded him.

We still have to go out in the boat, and get rid of the body.

I can’t help you tonight, I have another engagement. Let’s get rid of the body this afternoon. The beach is normally isolated at that time of the day.

Ok, help me to lift him into the boat and cover him.

The boat was on a trailer in the garage. They transferred the body and hitched the trailer onto the car.

Come and have a drink while I run a shower and change my clothes. While his accomplice takes a shower, Lewis sits on the verandah with a beer. He hurries to the car when he hears him calling from the garage.

Soon they were moving through the city towards the coast.

Stop at the pub. Lewis demanded.

I’ll stop at a pub down the coast. The traffic is too heavy, and I’ve got the trailer to consider. You know how the kids always come to admire the ski boat. They might just lift up the plastic. Then we’ve had it.

    Ok, but make it quick.

They drove down the coast which took them nearly an hour. He stopped at a pub in a small village they had to pass through, for Lewis to buy his beer. While Lewis was in the pub he stood alongside the boat to make sure that nobody lifted the canvas.

Arriving at the beach, the ski boat was launched with some difficulty. One lone fisherman offered his help, but was refused. The ocean was calm which helped a lot and soon they were speeding away from the coast. Out of view of the shore, they stopped the boat and hauled the body overboard, first attaching it to a heavy anchor to keep him down. Lewis wasn’t much help as he had drunk a six pack swiftly.

"Well, that’s a relief,’ he said.

The trip back to the city was quick as there was not much traffic. Dropping Lewis off at his boarding house, he warns him once again.

Lewis, just one word from you, and you’re dead.

You just keep your side of the bargain.

Yeah, the problem is you talk too much when you’ve had a couple of beers.

He is relieved when he finally drives into his driveway. As he enters his house, he picks up his mail. What’s this. he laughs. Oh look! Dear Jack wants me to visit him for a fortnight next month.

Later as he sits on his deck with a beer in his hand, he reflects on his cousin Jack who had ruined his family as a child when he killed his younger brother. He hated him but made a good show of hiding his emotions. After all Jack contributed to his income every month. Then he thinks of his girlfriend. She was becoming a problem. She seemed to think that he had an unlimited supply of money. He was still attracted to her, but enough was enough. She even expected him to help her daughter occasionally. He should never have allowed her to move into his house. Thank goodness she was visiting her daughter
