Penny Poetry - Charles K. Cole

    Foreword

This is a book of poetry.

That is all it is meant to be.

    Lines of words,

    it has many.

    Not worth a dime,

    but certainly a penny.

    .01 The music

The music didn't sound the same.

It is not quite how I remembered.

    There is something different now.

Has it lost its soul or have I lost mine?

There is a beat, but I don't feel it.

There is a word, but I won't sing it.

There is a whole melody that I'm not hearing.

    Where has it all gone?

Once I heard it all, the instruments blazing.

When the music wasn't distant or foreign.

    Once I heard a song.

One that comforted and healed me.

.02 What is the difference ?

I thought I heard the whisper of a butterfly, as she floated by, through the sky.

The leaves rustled in the breeze, time seems to freeze for the elder trees.

What ever happens to the fish’s tears, over the years, do they re-appear?

I might have lost all I found, on the ground, all around.

I thought I saw a moon-lit day, but the moon went away, it couldn’t stay.

The body trembles to the bone, when you’re alone, your soul is prone.

What ever happens to the love you take, it is your mistake, you forsake?

I may just wait a while, forego the smile, that is my style.

I thought I felt a gentle touch, it was too much, this is such.

The mind struggles with the very thought, of things that ought, but can’t be bought.

What ever happens to the child’s dreams, too big it seems, to the extremes?

I will have to contemplate, of this I state, must not hesitate.

    .03 What if?

What if I wasted all of my wishes on dreams that will never come true?

How could I swim in an ocean of fishes if I couldn't swim next to you?

Why did I go and jump in the fire, did I think I wouldn't get burned?

When did I lose the strength and desire? By now, I should have learned.

What if I wanted nothing from you?

How could I ever see it through?

Why did I go and leave you unturned?

When did I lose the desire that I yearned?

    .04 Hero

My mind is on fire and across the wire comes crackling lies and hate.

Am I all alone, cold as a stone, as I just sit here and wait?

Is it when or how or even just why as I anticipate the worst?

Do I laugh, do I cry when the next hero dies, do I let my bubble be burst?

My heart left empty, without any hope.

Nothing to hang on to, no more rope.

My hero has vanished, that must be one of his powers.

I’ll wait in the dark, I’ll wait for hours.

My feet firmly planted, I’ll make a stand.

    Without that never-coming helping hand.

    No one
