“Did you hear about the sailing boat that was sent to Kanala from the Bermuda Triangle a couple of hours ago, Siela?”

“No, I haven’t. I was looking for pink coral to make a potion with. Why? It’s not the first time a ship is sent there, Galene.”

“I know, but this is the first time that I hear about a boat full of handsome Landers (earthlings) between the ages of seventeen and twenty-one. They are probably from a sailing school or something.”

“Your fascination towards Lander boys is disturbing, Galene.”

“Disturbing? Let me tell you my idea of disturbing, Siela.
A talented, beautiful eighteen-year-old girl with a crush on a twenty-year old Empyrean boy who is in love with someone else; that’s ‘disturbing’, my friend.”

“Okay, okay, you don’t have to be mean about it, Galene!”

My Nereid friend gave me a hug as a sign of being sorry.
Her words hurt me because she was right. ‘Lussan’ has been my crush since I was twelve years old.

“It’s okay, Galene. I know you are right. To show you how much your friendship means to me, I am taking you to Kanala.”

My best friend was killed in a motorcycle accident. He was eighteen years old like me when he died. I was invited to a lagoon and I decided to summon Jesses spirit while I was in the water. I didn’t know how to swim and I almost drown while calling for Jesse.
The moment I reached shore a strong realization came to my head. The only way that I could see Jesse again is by being dead like him!

People tend to summon a loved one when they die. Sometimes the right soul or spirit hears the summoning, but sometimes the ones listening are the Soul Thieves.

A Sentinel is in charge of guarding human souls from the Soul Thieves who sells them to a diabolic goblin named Azura. She eats the souls to stay young and powerful.

My name is Leila and I was named an Earth Sentinel by my dead twin sister Lia.

My mission is to battle Soul Thieves and destroy Azura with the help of a ninteen-year old Earth Sentinel named Max and his sister April.

The three of us were given a special power to help us be victorious.

Chapter 1

EMPYREAN

Sitting on my favorite conch shell waiting for my friends ‘Galene’, the Nereid of calm seas, and ‘Doris’ the Nereid of seas bounty, to arrive, I admired a flock of white birds flying around me.

I live in a beautiful kingdom above the sea water called ‘Empyrean’.

Empyreans live in identical four-level castles in the middle of what ‘Landers’ (earthlings) call the Bermuda Triangle.

Our homes were erected on top of 300 foot-high rocks with God Poseidon permission.

We all know Landers are the rulers of all the land. However, when any kind of ship, submarine, or aircraft trespasses ‘the protected area’, all the landers inside them are sent to an ‘outer-time’ macrocosm that mimics the structure and living conditions of a big island from their ‘inner-time’ called ‘Kanala’, while everything else gets dematerialized into the air.

When I found out about Kanala, I highly criticized everyone involved in its creation. I asked if the trespassers had an alternative.

My king’s response was: The alternative is death!

He reminded me that the reason why the waters of our homes were so important was because Nereids, mermaids, and other sea creatures live right below us in the depth of the sea. One of Poseidon’s conditions to let us live above his waters was to protect them.

I quietly walked away from him, thinking that Kanala was not such a bad idea after all.

Empyreans are able to survive under the water using our magic abilities. Therefore Poseidon is not our God or King. Our king’s name is ‘Essaste’.

Nobody really knows how old he really is. The Queen’s name is ‘Neeta’.

Essaste and Neeta created Empyrean with the sole purpose of having all magical families living together in one beautiful, peaceful place. Empyrean is invisible to Landers. They have no idea when their ships or airplanes are going to crash against the rock of one of our homes.

My parents were coupled by Queen Neeta. She is the only one among us who can foretell who belongs with whom. Fortunately she has always been right and I was born.

My name is Siela. The story that I am about to reveal contains all past events that led me to where I am right now.

KANALA
