Adventures of Bear & Dragon 3 - Chris Carmines
CHAPTER ONE
As told by Little Bear
No doubt you’ve guessed, Yorkshire and I were made in America. It’s true, we like to travel too. Our people friend (Christine) took us all about, when we lived in Uncle Bear’s State (California). She has these Indian – Native American – I don’t know which term to use as some liked one and others the other – anyway, friends is what I mean to say. They remind Yorkshire and me of us, you see.
So many of our tales too we’d lost. Had you known I’d been a bear cub or Yorkshire a dragon imp? Had you heard of the Great Council, or the dragon wars, or even of wizards and messenger owls? Well, just like us, they’d all been real once.
We soon discovered, like the others, Native kind didn’t know their tales either. They forgot how their ancestors once spoke with us. Not just silly toys or fetish (those are tiny statue) dolls, we were real once. Some were finding us real still. No doubt you see, it was a very exciting time to be.
People kind was wondering, even dreaming how it had been. I thrilled that they could feel us again. They called it our ‘medicine’. Gifted from the dragons before people beings had been. Remember, that I told you when?
It was then that we became medicine for them, and medicine we remain. Their children are remembering to call us again. So while much was forgotten, much is stirring still.
Yorkshire and I watched as some American people kind sought what their elders had known, wished to do as they had done – in the long, long ago when all of us still played, before they and dragons warred, before the Callers came, before the Elvin lords cast the Glamour.
I stirred too you see, though stuffed now with orange foam I be. I longed to help, to reverse the enchantment that pulled magick folk from people beings. Yet I am just a little bear you see. All those things are far too complex for me.
Yorkshire and I decided we’d do best adventuring. So
