About this ebook

The Great Spirit of Light set all energies in motion with elegant algorithm. Time, an essential ingredient, remained unmeasured. The way my story came to be told, who knows about time, but in fairness, it now does seem just a few days ago. My story begins on an island, an island far out in the greatest of those seas, an island we called Eden. I was a young female, a female at the age to mate and bear young, a female they called Eve.
Some of you think our kind must have been slow witted, grunting, unattractive creatures. We were not. We were as bright as you, walked upright, too. Our language was simple yet full of meaning, color, and passion when you took into account the many gestures that filled the gaps between intent and understanding. We had no single word for the sun, moon, or stars. They were too full of wonder to express in a word. In telling you my story, I will use your language, and likely some unseen gestures of habit, relying on your imagination to fill any gaps.
It may surprise you to know there were twelve earthly gardens. They flourished under the care of the spirits of light, spirits I named The Watchers. Six of those gardens were near great river ways, one on a grassland plain, one on the driest of places, two were high among the highest mountains, and two on islands in great seas. One of those islands was my Eden.
The gardens were not defined by vegetation, lush or otherwise, but by creatures of a certain kind, my kind. Unlike others of my kind, we learned to live together with loving care and respect for each other. When the fruits of these gardens were ripe and ready for inspiration, The Creator acted. I was given the chance to be the first, the first in the image of that creative spirit, the first of a new kind on earth. Can you imagine?
Then a jealous spirit took notice, a spirit The Watchers called The Dark One.

    Legal Notice:

In fiction, the writer is advised to state that the characters in the book are not to be confused with any human beings, living or dead. I so state here, but personally, this writer thinks that is a shameful legal requirement. I am grateful for those in the world who might be confused with the caring and courageous ways of that first human and the hard working, can-do attitude of her mate.

    Dedication:

Eve’s Creation Story, My Week On Eden is dedicated to:

my wife Sharon, a nurse, whose hard work made it possible for us to spend seven months on a mid-Pacific island, and whose angel inspires me to write.

the woman at a book signing for my first book, Resonant Trinities, who said I was going to the original Garden of Eden and another woman who said I was going there for a special purpose.

the small gardens of beautiful spirits we met on the island: the nurses who care for others and Reverend Shirley and her congregation of 12.

    Preface:

Eve’s Creation Story, My Week On Eden is the story of Eve’s love for Adam and the seven days that changed the world. In oral tradition, her story would be told for millennia by women with marvelous story-telling flair. Those who listened could imagine they were there sharing that glorious morning of that sixth day on Eden.

Over time, men came to be the only story-tellers. When her story was finally written, it was not her story. Then a second creation story was added setting Eve as an afterthought of Creation, consolation for a lonely man, the first to sin. Declared sacred, it remained immutable for centuries.

Invite the spirit of Eve into your open heart, that ancient clearing where we gather around the light, tell our stories, and know the truth. Thanks to her, the light burns brightly.

DAY 1 A Mate For Life

The elders were soon to choose my mate. It was not to be Adam.

As the time came near to hear their decision, it became more difficult to sleep. When I did sleep, my dream of many nights came. This night, the one in my dream who flew down from the land we called the sleeping giant urged me to follow her words.

Esta whispered. Why are you getting up? It is still long before first light.

How did Esta know I was getting up? The fresh soft leaves of my sleeping place, so generously provided by Eden every night, made no sound when I rose to my feet. But that was like Esta. She seemed to know things others did not.

I cannot go back to sleep. My dream came again this night. When it comes, it is hard to think of anything else. It comes more often. This time, her eyes seemed to tell me more than her words.

Esta knew the dream as well as I did. The dream you had since you were so young. To have such a mystery in your young life and I cannot help you know its meaning.

I am going so I will be at my tree before first light. Something is going to happen soon. I feel it.

I feel it, too, but the meaning is not shown to me.

Esta, the elders say they will choose my mate in two days. I must speak with you and Nelo before that. I have heard some speak when they did not know I could hear. They say it will be Kane. I do not want to mate with Kane.

Speak softly. You will wake the others. Your time has come to have a mate and the older ones in the village will choose. It has been this way since our ancestors came to the island. It is a good way. Nelo and I have been good together and gave life to you. He does not tire of telling the others that you are my gift to him and the village. That pleases me so.

I know and I love you and Nelo. But I have strong feelings for Adam.

Esta continued in a soft voice, Does Adam know how you feel about him?

We have not talked about it because of our custom but he must know by now.

I understand those feelings and respect you and Adam for honoring our ways. I did not tell you this before but I had strong feelings for another when Nelo was chosen for me. Know that those feelings pass and life with a well-chosen mate is good. Nelo is a good mate for me. Others in the village see that we are good together. That is so for the others and we continue that way. It is good.
