      at the end of a long spiral descent, i came to the trees i found the day before. eight trees sitting in a perfect circle.

      i came to sit at the counsel of trees expecting to write a great sonnet or timeless tale. instead, as i sat there in silence, i learned everything i needed to know about being a Lover.

      i had come with great expectations demanding inspiration. but when i arrived, the moment called for an offering. i lit a smudge stick, spit carefully on the tip of the match to put it out, and crawled on top of a massive stump marking the northern gate of the circle.

      i had waited for a Love like this without knowing first how to give it. permission to be quiet and without expectation. my writing quota fell away. there was nothing to be
