Europe And Beyond

THE COUNTRYSIDE IS BEAUTIFUL.

I sit quietly on the express from Turkey to France and enjoy the view. The green pastures of home have given way to vineyards and long fields of daisy dotted green where sheep chew on the first grasses of summer, looking as satisfied as the small white fluffy animals can be.

My mother is getting married again and I have been summoned from my job as an advertising executive to the small winery where I spent most of my youth. I believe that this is the third man in the last four years and richer by sevenfold than the last.

A beep from my phone alerts me to yet another email from the woman.

I glance down at the screen and decide that I don't really need to know the details of her latest major impediment to marital success. I already suspect that she'll be divorcing this one shortly after marrying - a cycle that never seems to end.

I wave my hand at the young woman that is working the aisles. This is the fourth time that she has asked. I was asleep the last time. Someone really needs to take her job less seriously.

Watching the view, I continue my thoughts. They are not very entertaining for a man of my age. Next year I will be 35. Turning 30 was a big step for me. My thoughts are broken. This is the second time in 10 minutes. Normally I am a calm man, but this woman...

I turn, ready to unleash hell, and stop. My mouth drops open and I cannot close it. Did I even really pay any attention to the woman all those times that she came by? What was I missing? I feel somewhat stupid.

I nod and she hands me a cup. Fool that I am, I pass her my wallet. She takes it and looks at me askance. I blink and take it back, pass her a note and stare. It is outrageous that here of all places I would find her, but right in front of me is the woman that I want to spend my life with. There can be no doubt of it and if my heartbeat is anything to go by it is certain.

Thanks, I mumble.
