Many thanks must go out to my editor Gilly Wright. Without her kind words of encouragement, fine tweaking, and most of all knowledge of writing and editing, I’m most sure this book would have stayed on my iPad forever without being published. Again thank you, Gilly. Gillywright.com

To the very creative Brynna Curry, your calm words during our many phone conversations put my mind at ease night after night after I hung up with you. (Maybe it was your accent but whatever it was) your skills and talents set up my beautiful website, Facebook, Twitter accounts and all of the publishing sites. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You saved me from having a nervous breakdown during this whole process. A big thank you for doing such a great job formatting my book.

Special thanks goes out to my Beta readers, Lisa and Jenn without the bantering back and forth this book would still be locked away in my mind.

To my loving husband, you have always supported me in everything I’ve ever done and this project was no exception. It was those words that gave me the courage to write this book. Even though neither of you are here today to celebrate with me, I know you are with me in spirit.

Chapter One

A Brand New Day

Sarah McLachlan’s Illusions of Bliss blared through Sophie’s iPad as she starred out her apartment window. Wondering how she gotten to this critical stage in her life.

The sun had just started to peak through the clouds, giving brightness to the beginning of another scorching July day in Baltimore. Stale humidified air hissed from the vent just below her feet, sending shivers up and down her body. At one point in Sophie’s life her apartment was a place she had grown to love, but now it was full of sad memories of her past.

I want to feel loved more than anything in this world, she cried out to her best friend Lexi. Having craptastic days for the past two years was normal for Sophie; she was already setting herself up for failure.

Today is going to be fun, Sophie. It’s spa day and we haven't done spa day in months. What makes you feel that you aren't loved?

Sophie took a long deep breath before letting her emotions freely expel from her inner soul. I'm so jealous of the relationship you have with Bryce. The way he takes care of you just blows my mind. You never worry about anything. He buys your clothes, takes you out to nice restaurants, treats you to lavish vacations all over the world, and what do I have? Nothing. Just this dismal, empty apartment with memories of what I used to have.

Lexi turned toward Sophie, grasping her closely. Squeezed until her chest was compressed against Lexi’s comforting breasts, Sophie struggled to take a deep breath, but the circulation to her upper body was being restricted.

Your Prince Charming is out there somewhere, but you just haven't come face-to-face with him yet.

She sighed and pulled out of Lexi’s tight grip. My beautiful Prince Charming died two years ago, in a horrible car accident. Carl was my everything. He was my sunshine on a rainy day, and my stars that shown bright in the sky. I only had six years with him. I hate to say this, but he was my best friend. Now look at me. I'm just a lonely twenty-nine-year-old widow.

"Stop it … that’s not true. I’ve never abandoned you in your time of grief. I’ve stuck to you just like glue, but it’s been you who’s pushed me to the side. You, Sophie, never seem to have time for anyone in your life, especially your friends. You've isolated yourself like you have a disease, which you know you don’t have, that’s all you are doing. How many times have I come over to your dreary apartment? Countless times. You sometimes don’t even acknowledge the sun is shining outside. I’m starting to think, if you didn’t have to get up and go to work, I would find you curled up in a ball on your floor. Sophie, you’ve made your own life a living hell, not your friends, and especially not Carl’s death.

"You always answer me like nothing was eating at your soul. You’ve lied to me numerous times. I’ve watched you feel sorry for yourself. You always say today’s the day you’re stepping out, but when it’s all said and done you crawl back into the closed-off, hard shell you’ve built up around yourself. To make matters worse, you hibernate. Instead of opening yourself up to new beginnings, you wash down your sorrow with a tub of Ben & Jerry's while watching reruns of Friends."

Sophie was beginning to feel like Lexi had just stabbed her in the heart with her sharpest surgical knife.

Every time I get up the nerve to make a difference, something always seems to get in my way. Things happen at work or it’s a special holiday that brings back a sad memory of Carl. I snap out of it, but it hits me like a ton of bricks.

She sat back down on a chair in her bedroom. Looking out the window, she tried to remember the last time she actually smiled, laughed, or went out with her very small, select group of friends.

Yeah, I go out to the charity benefits Carl’s family organizes or a board meeting at the hospital, just to hear everyone say, ‘How’s it going, Sophie. You buried Carl two years ago, wake up from the hell you’ve put yourself in and take a chance on a new beginning.’

Lexi walked over, sat in the chair next to Sophie and lightly reached for her hands and said, You two were a great couple, but Carl would not have wanted you to be this miserable.

I miss his touch, his smell, the way he looked when he was happy. Believe it or not, I really miss his sad pouty face. All I see now is the crumpled up car, with Carl’s body bruised, bloody, lying there lifeless. It was torture knowing I couldn't do anything to save his life.

Carl's injuries were so severe that no one, especially you, could have saved him. We all saw the car, Sophie. It was unrecognizable. It’s a miracle we didn’t lose you too. Lexi was becoming agitated when she said, Remember you were also injured. It took you over a month just to walk again because of the injuries to your legs. I don't know if you really remember, but not all of your injuries were physical. A lot of them were emotional.

Sometimes it’s so hard just to get up knowing he's not going to wake up next to me. Tears started to stream down Sophie’s cheeks. For months I have reached over to where I knew he slept, searching the bed frantically until I wake up in a cold sweat wondering why he wasn't there. I have flashbacks of the conversation about how we were so excited that the new house would be done in just under a month. Then it would hit me: the sudden impact of the truck hitting our car. The screeching of the metal colliding as the two vehicles were entwined into a heavy pile of steel, and the swerving and tumbling of the car until finally everything was frozen in time. I still feel like it was all a dream, and I'm going to wake up like nothing happened. I know how stupid to think such a crazy thing.

Screaming at the top of her lungs Sophie yelled, Why me, Lord? Why…Why…Why? I don’t really remember exactly why the contractors on the new house called Carl, but it had something to do with a special addition he was putting in at the last minute. Carl would have met with the contractors himself, but knowing we were going out with you guys afterward, he felt it would make more sense to make the quick stop first, and then head out for a night of fun on the town.

Sophie, you have replayed the entire accident a million times. No one could predict a thunderstorm was going to erupt while you guys were driving to the house. Put a stop to it. Now! The accident could have been far worse. I could have lost you forever. Carl’s death was undeniably the worse thing for all of us, but as it stands, everyone has moved forward, except you. It’s time for you to stop feeling so damn sorry for yourself. What you’re doing to your friends is so not comprehensible. Nobody wants to walk around on eggshells when we’re around you. You’ve got to see that for yourself. You’re a smart woman who has never had a fear of anything, but what you’re doing now is alienating the friends who love you unconditionally.

Her injuries had been more severe than just a broken leg, bumps, and bruises. She had suffered an emotional loss. Her heart was broken, and no matter how many counseling sessions she went to, it still did not ease her heart.

I’m starting to regret ever bringing it up to you.

That’s not true and you know it. I'm your sounding board. I love when we have these conversations, but it’s been too damn long. You know it, I know it, and all our friends know it. You’re draining the life out of yourself, and you need to break the chains that keep you a prisoner in Hell. Get over it, Sophie…I’m not telling you to forget about Carl in any way, but what I’m suggesting is that you open up your eyes, look around you and see what you’ve shut out of your life for the past two years.

Sophie watched wide-eyed while Lexi paced around the cramped apartment, half expecting steam to come out of her best friend’s ears.

Since Carl's death you have spent every waking hour at the hospital. I know you love being a cardiologist, but do you ever think about yourself for just a minute? Being a success is one thing, but being a loony-woman hermit is so depressing. I think you’re suffering from a broken heart and just won’t admit it to yourself. Once you finally see the big picture, you’re most likely going to smack yourself upside your smart head. Until you do that, I’m going to be by your side the entire way. I love you dearly, and it hurts me to see you this way. When's the last time you went out on a date? Talked to a guy who you sorta looked at more than twice?

Sophie rotated her eyes up toward the ceiling, and the tears were now rolling down her cheeks again. She had learned this trick in medical school. If she looked up at a bright light, she could stop herself from crying. That trick was not working for her anymore.

I can’t remember.

Lexi shouted, That’s your problem. You can't remember because you haven't been on a date since before you were married. It’s time, Sophie, it’s past time that you start living for you, not giving yourself over to death.

"What do you suggest I do, just sign up for one of the online dating services? Let’s see. Pick number 4056 just because he says the correct things on his video, or because his body looks like he just stepped off a modeling shoot? No, I’m not going to put myself out on the market just so some sweet-talking guy can crush me. You know, that whole meet a guy at church thing? My mother keeps threatening that she’s going to set me up on a blind date with the next guy who comes to our church singles night. That’s so not going to happen either. Carl’s parents belong to the same church. It would just be so awkward with everyone staring at me. ‘Look at poor Sophie, set up by her mother on a mercy date.’ That’s not going to happen, not in this lifetime."

Both women’s voices had gone up an octave.

I never said anything about a dating service or picking up a guy at church. What about coming to the club Bryce and I go to regularly? The club is screaming with a whole bunch of single guys.

It was now Sophie turned to stalk the room nervously while Lexi sat to continue reminiscing.

Bryce and Carl had gotten together on a few occasions and talked about the two of you joining the club, but with getting married and then finishing up your residency, Carl wanted to wait until you guys were settled in the new house, then bring it up to you.

I was always happy in the bedroom department. I had always enjoyed sex, and if anything, I think Carl was amazed I didn't mind him jumping me after a long shift at the hospital. He knew that's how I released everything that happened during the day.

Had you noticed anything new about Carl in the last couple of months before he died?

I knew Bryce and Carl were getting together to have beers every week on Wednesday's when you and I were going to the gym. What are you saying, Lexi?

We've all changed, Sophie, and not to bring up a sad memory with you, but didn't you notice a new spark between you and Carl in the bedroom that you hadn't witnessed before?

Pacing back and forth, Sophie stopped in the center of the room. She couldn’t bring herself to make direct eye contact with Lexi. Instead, she stared down at her feet.

Hmmm, let me see, now that you’re saying it that way, yeah I guess you could call it that. Carl had started to explore using different props, or toys as he called them. I just went along because he was my husband. I trusted him with my life. He always made me feel good. Nothing ever seemed to hurt or cause me any pain.

Trying not to act embarrassed, Sophie turned around looked into her magical mirror hanging on the wall. Sophie looked just like Snow White did in the fairytale; the only difference was Sophie wasn’t asking who was the fairest of them all. What stared back at her was a look of desperation. Remembering she was telling Lexi about the changes she had seen in Carl his last few months he was alive, Sophie began speaking in a raspy voice.

"We started playing games, sorta like role-playing. He would ask me what I fantasized about, so I wrote down a few different scenarios of what I liked and didn’t like.

"The following week I guess he must have picked one of the scenarios, because he was the sexy hot principal, and I was the nerdy, smart, disobedient student who was constantly being sent to the principal’s office for discipline. It was a real change from our normal day-to-day sex life; it was exciting, titillating, fulfilling, and most of all, very hot.

You know, Carl did take me out to buy some sexy lingerie and dress-up accessories about a month before he died. He wanted me to do a lap dance for him. I told him I didn’t need fancy underwear to do a lap dance. He chuckled and said, ‘oh yes, you do.’ You know, I never got a chance to even put on the outfit, because it was another night we were all supposed to go out to dinner with you and Bryce, I ended up canceling at the last minute for an emergency at the hospital. Two gang members had gotten into a turf war over who could sell drugs on a particular street corner. The older gang member required open heart surgery to pull out a .40 caliber bullet from his right ventricle.

Even though Sophie had done everything humanly possible to save the young man’s life, the gang member died later that night. She had a horrible feeling she was being followed constantly by angry gang members, ever since that fateful night. This put Sophie’s life in danger. Not knowing when they would strike and hurt her, she was always on the defensive. This wasn’t the way she envisioned her life, constantly looking over her shoulder for the next possible strike against her.

I told Carl to go out with you guys, while I ended up staying overnight at the hospital.

I remember. We met up with Carl. The three of us did go to dinner together. Did you know what was planned for after dinner?

No, he had told me to pack my overnight bag with the new clothes, and to bring everything with us.

He never told you after dinner we were planning to go to the club for the first time? He had everything planned out for the two of you to experience the club together; but with your work emergency, Carl said he was just going home. He told us we could try to reschedule for next month. He was so sad after dinner. Bryce tried to talk him into still going out with us, but instead he just left and went home. He reassured Bryce that, come hell or high water, next month there would be no excuses for not visiting the club.

What were we going to try next month, Lexi? What’s this club you’re talking about? Is it a bar, and why would Carl look so sad? You know he wasn't a big drinker because of his older brother’s issue with alcohol abuse.

No, it’s not a bar per se. Maybe I shouldn't have brought it up. It’s just you look the same way Carl did then—sad. I want my friend back, the girl who wasn’t afraid to take a chance. The girl who took SCUBA lessons by herself, just so she could surprise her husband on a vacation. The girl who jumped out of a plane after she put herself through college and medical school with no help from anyone; the girl who was there when any of her friends were going through a bad break-up with the flavor of the month. You know before I settled down with Bryce I was a mess. You were the sister I never had, Sophie. You were so happy, carefree and ready to tackle anything that came your way.

Lexi, that still doesn't answer my question. What is this club you’re talking about? Answer me. You’re my best friend, and yes, you’re in every sense my sister. I would give you anything I had if you were in my situation, and I know what you’re telling me must be very important. So for God’s sake, just tell me.

Lexi had a very worried, puzzled look on her face, and Sophie picked up on it immediately.

Sophie, why don't we do this: instead of me telling you about the club, why don't I ask Bryce to explain it to you, and we’ll go from there. It makes more sense if we do it that way. Bryce is excellent at giving a full overview of what our lifestyle is all about. Plus, he enjoys talking about the club.

Chapter Two

Spa Day with the Girls

Now, let’s not keep beating ourselves up. It’s spa day, so before you can interject, I've already spoken to Macy and Meghan. Both are meeting us at the spa; and yes, you’re getting the full-treatment makeover. Don’t bother to put up a fight, because we’re going shopping afterward, and you are getting a whole new wardrobe. You need to wear real clothes again, not your hospital scrubs.

Oh my God. You should have told me we were meeting up with Macy and Meghan.

Allowing emotions to boil inside of her was the last thing she needed at this moment; instead, making a positive change for everyone was now more important in Sophie’s eyes. She kept thinking about was how she loved being around both Macy and Meghan. She missed spending holidays, birthdays, and Sunday supper with Carl’s sisters. For two years, Sophie had chosen to
