    PUNISHING MISS PRIMROSE, PART XX

IT STILL ASTOUNDED the Marquess of Carey that she could have escaped. Upon learning that she had quit Medham Hall—having stolen his best horse, no less—Spencer had ridden after her on his second fastest steed. With her injured ankle and his superior riding abilities, he knew he would overcome her on the roads. His desire to throttle her would only be tempered by his relief at seeing her safe. The driver who had delivered the abigail, Allison, had told him that the lady in question had asked for directions to the nearest posting inn, but at the inn, Spencer had been told that no woman, alone on horseback, had arrived yet. Beatrice must have known that, if she were discovered, the Marquess of Carey would pursue her. Knowing he could best her on horseback, she might have gone into hiding till he had passed her. Or perhaps she had bribed the abigail’s driver to send him to the wrong posting inn. Miss Primrose may lack his equestrian skills, but the woman was damnably clever.

Leaving the innkeeper every incentive to, effectively, hold Miss Primrose hostage and send word to Medham Hall as soon as she arrived, Spencer had returned home to conduct a thorough inquisition of the coachman, the groom, and the abigail. Allison had quickly succumbed to tears and admitted that she was to pretend that Miss Primrose was in her room. Spencer believed the maid when she said that she knew nothing more for Miss Primrose had not confided in her. Giuseppe, his own valet, had then informed him that Miss Primrose had inquired of him as to the roads west. She claimed to have had a dear friend in Bath that she wished to visit.
