    Chapter One

What the hell was that? We were headed south on the freeway in the middle of a Los Angeles rush hour and it sounded like someone was shooting at us.

Rudy’s shoulders jerked up around his ears. I don’t know, but there it goes again.

Jesus! I crouched behind the driver’s seat, fully expecting to be showered with glass fragments from a bullet-shattered windshield. There was another explosion, this one loud enough to shake the truck down to its wheelbase.

Oh, hell! Jackson cranked the steering wheel hard to the right and steered our rig off into the emergency lane. Our exit from traffic was accompanied by the bleating of car horns and the curses of fellow drivers who obviously did not appreciate vintage bread trucks.

Are we dead yet? I cautiously ventured to stick my head up over Jackson’s shoulder.

We’re still breathing, but I’m afraid the truck is terminal. Jackson flipped a middle-finger salute in response to a semi driver who roared by us waving his fist menacingly.

This couldn’t just be lack of gas, huh?

Afraid not, Miles. This is more like lack of engine components.

    Now what? Rudy sounded tense.

You’re the treasurer, Jackson reminded him. What’s the story?

The story is a sad one. Our joint assets currently amount to three hundred twenty-five dollars and change. Unless we get towed to a garage that does charity work, I’d say we’re fucked—financially speaking, that is.

The sign painted on the door proclaimed our savior to be Honest Joe’s Bargain Tows, but I sincerely doubted it. Let’s face the facts here—the drivers of vehicles stalled on the freeway are in a weak negotiating position. Based on Jackson’s exasperated expression when he stomped back to the truck, I figured I was right.

That fucker wants a hundred and fifty bucks to tow us to the nearest service station. Jackson clambered back in the van and slammed the door so hard my ears popped. After a brief consultation, we decided that we were screwed in any case and might as well get off the freeway before we got tagged by the cops for obstructing traffic. Honest Joe’s roadside representative hooked us up and we lumbered to the next exit and then proceeded onto the surface streets.

Hey, guys, check it out. Things are looking up. We’re in West Hollywood.

Great, Miles. Maybe we’ll be discovered and become movie stars. Rudy was still decidedly grumpy. I slumped back on one of our mattresses and sulked until we pulled into a seedy-looking garage.

Well, it looks like we can afford to repair the van, Jackson announced after a mechanic who looked like the tow truck driver’s younger brother had peered under the hood.

So what’s the bad news? Rudy was ever the
