About this ebook

In part one, our hero, Miles Diamond, narrowly averts financial catastrophe when he is hired by David Travis to find his missing twin brother. Unfortunately, Miles’ new case almost immediately throws him into a dangerous world of sex trafficking, drugs and international terrorism where he is soon in as much danger as the man he is trying to find. As part one ended, Miles found himself in the delectable, but dangerous, clutches of criminal mastermind Nelson Chin and his henchman, Jackson. We left Miles in a pit below the high tide mark, with water rising fast. Will he be rescued before the water rises above his head permanently? Will he be able to stop having hot sex long enough to find the missing twin? Will his best buddy, Rudy Vale, be able to resist the temptation of throttling him? To find the answer to some if not all of these questions, read on.

    Chapter Four

My ears were ringing and my lungs felt like they were going to burst when, suddenly, I saw a light far off in the passageway. Yup, this was death—a light at the end of the tunnel, just like in the National Enquirer. Next thing I’d be seeing was angel wings and harps, or, more likely, little red guys running around with pitchforks.

What I really saw next looked better to me than any angel face I could imagine. Just as I was ready to start swallowing water in earnest, I was suddenly yanked out of the pit and something warm was holding me, pounding me on the back. My eyes focused on Jackson’s homely face, eerily illuminated by the flashlight he held.

Christ, man, I sputtered, you’re about the last person I ever expected to see again.

Yeah, well, I couldn’t do it. I may be a lot of things that don’t sit too well with the law, but I’m not a murderer. Besides, you were nice to me. Most guys aren’t.

Believe me, Jackson, from now on I’ll be nice to you anytime you want. Let’s get the hell out of here. I’m freezing.

Jackson half-dragged, half-carried me along the underground passage until we came to a flight of stairs leading back up to ground level. We climbed up and stepped out into The Blue Banjo, an old tavern in Pioneer Square that was still connected to the underground. We drew a couple of curious looks, but most folks were listening intently to the musicians up on the stage. In this place, it would take more than the sight of a man who was dripping seawater to attract any serious attention. We threaded our way through the crowd and stepped out onto the sidewalk. I took a deep breath of the night air. It was laced with the aroma of garbage and diesel exhaust, and it smelled terrific.

Thanks, Jackson. I won’t forget about this. See you around. I started down First Avenue, intent on getting back to my office. Jackson followed me like a shadow. What are you going to do now? I asked after it became apparent that we weren’t just coincidentally following the same path.

Well, I can’t go back to Chin. When he finds out about what I’ve done, I’m dead meat. I thought I might trail along with you—sort of help you stay out of trouble. Besides, I think I can help you find this dude you’re looking for. That is, if he’s still alive to be found.

Oh? I looked at him quizzically. Anybody who had any ideas on this case was way out in front of the pack, as far as I was concerned. So talk, Jackson.

Just to set the record straight, I want you to know that I wasn’t involved in this caper. I ran into Chin when I was down on my luck and he took a shine to me for some reason. I think he needed someone to talk to.

Are you trying to tell me he took you on as a companion?

Just because I couldn’t remember to keep my guard up in the ring doesn’t mean I’m brain-dead.

    Sorry, Jackson.

    Don’t mention it. It’s a natural assumption.

So what about the Travis twin? I asked, steering the conversation back to the matter at hand.

I know that this De Groot dude runs a nightclub in Amsterdam that’s really a front for an extremely expensive international procurement ring. If you’ve got enough money, he’ll find you the man of your dreams. Chin has had dealings with him on a pretty regular basis during the course of the last couple of years.

So how did Chin and Dan Travis cross paths?

Jackson shook his head in the negative.

And why stage an accident? It seems to me that a simple kidnapping with the promise of a big ransom would have been a better deal for all parties.

I think maybe Chin just screwed up, Jackson said thoughtfully. "He dabbles in the drug trade and he’s been sampling his wares a little heavily of late. Maybe you noticed it tonight. He doesn’t always think too clearly. All I really know is that this Travis guy appeared in Chin’s private office one night, then he
