    Chapter 1

Clifford Crawford sat behind his large Mahogany desk tapping his fingers nervously.

He was trying to decide exactly what to say one of his young marketing executive’s.

At the same moment there was a knock on the door, which brought him out of his

train of thought. Come in. He said in a commanding voice. When the door opened a well dress gentleman stepped into the room. Come in, Paul. Clifford stood up to greet home. Clifford held out his hand to shake Paul’s hands. Paul’s six-four large frame

towered over Clifford’s stocky five foot ten height.

How are you doing, Paul? Clifford asked. Have a seat, he motioned to the chair

next to Paul’s. Even though Paul looked down at Clifford, he had an air of authority

    that everyone looked up too.

    I’m fine, Mr. Crawford.

Call me Clifford. He motioned again for Paul to sit Sit down.

Paul felt a little nervous about the one on one meeting with the CEO of the Company. The only time he actually had spoken to him was at a board meeting and polite ‘hellos’ in the hallway.

So Paul, you’ve been working for me for over five years now. You are moving up in the company quickly, that’s impressive. Well, I’ll get right to the point. What I have brought you here for is because I need a favor. Clifford began, pausing for a moment. You see I have a daughter from my previous marriage. She has just graduated from college her major was marketing and business. She wants to come here to do a internship. Clifford paused again taking a deep breath. Paul could see that this was awkward for him he just sat there patiently. What I need from you is for you to show her the ropes. I would do it myself but I have to go on a vacation with my wife. I have been promising her all year for a trip to Monaco on our yacht. If I cancel another vacation she will divorce me.

Paul just sat there listening. This is going to be easy. Paul thought to himself, and hopefully there will be a nice promotion out of it. I would be happy to show your daughter the ropes around here, Sir. Paul stated with a smile.

"Well, I’m not quit finished. There’s another thing I need you to do. My ex-wife has

informed me that my daughter, Lily is engaged to her college boyfriend. My ex-wife believes that he is after her money. He has already asked Lily to loan him money to start a business. You see, my daughter has not had a lot of experience with men. She’s naïve. You see I have to be very careful with gold diggers taking advantage of her. I choose you to do this job because you are a young good looking man." Clifford paused, when he saw Paul blushing.

From what I’ve seen around the office you have a way with the ladies. Before Clifford could finish Paul interrupted. But, Sir. I’m….

Yes, I already know you are engaged. Clifford continued. "I just want you

to flatter her maybe even flirt a little, just enough to show her that other men could be interested in her. It’s been four years since I’ve seen her but I’m sorry to say that she’s a little on the homely side. Her mother lives in Arizona making pottery and living off the land. She’s made my daughter into a hippy just like her. She hasn’t grown out of being a hippy in twenty-two years. Clifford was red from the top of his baldhead to below his neckline. He hated to go to this level of bribing someone but to help his daughter he would do anything. You could show her around New York. Introduce her to people. She just needs a little bit of distraction to take her mind off her fiancé. It will only be for three months." Clifford stopped to see if Paul had anything to say.

Paul, do you think you can handle the job. There could be a nice promotion in it for you. I’m looking for a new vice president for marketing. Clifford added for an additional incentive. He paused taking a deep breath waiting for Paul’s response.

Paul sat there thinking for a moment. It’s only for three months and maybe he could find some poor sap to help him entertain her. Paul reasoned with himself.

Clifford it would be my pleasure to help you out. It will be nice to have a assistant for awhile. Paul responded with a big smile.

Will you have a problem with your fiancé with any of this? Clifford questioned.

Don’t worry, I will explain the situation to her. Paul answered.

Well, then she will be here on Friday. You have three days to get ready. Clifford said, then standing to signal that the meeting was over.

When Paul got back to his office his friend Jeff popped his head around the corner of his office door. Well, what did the big honcho want? Jeff asked, walking further into the office.

You won’t believe this he wants me to babysit his homely daughter. Even take her out, introduce her to people, and make her thing she’s attractive. Paul began.

Jeff chuckled. Why, does he want you to do that?

She has a gold digging fiancé and he wants to get rid of him. He thinks a little attention from me will make her leave him. Paul laughed.

So, what will Claire think of this. When you tell her you better be about ten feet away. Jeff chuckled again. Well, I can’t wait to see this. She must be a real dog, if the big boss wants you to do this. Jeff said as he left the office. Paul slumped back into his chair behind his desk, thinking.

    Chapter 2

Lily arrived Thursday afternoon in New York City. As she walked off the plane instead of seeing her father, she saw a chauffer standing there, holding a sign with her name on it. That’s typical that her father would send a chauffer instead of coming himself. It’s only been four years since he’s seen her.

I’m Lily Crawford. She told the chauffer.

"It’s nice to meet you, Ms. Crawford! Mr. Crawford asked me to pick you up because he

had an important meeting this afternoon." The driver said smiling at her.

Lily just nodded and smiled back. The chauffer took her carry bag from her and escorted her to the car.

A large black limousine, what a waste for one person, Lily thought to herself. When they left the airport they went towards the city. Lily expected to be taken to her father’s house outside the city instead they were heading towards downtown New York. They pulled in front of a high rise right of Park Ave. The chauffer go out of the car and came around to Lily’s door opening it for her. Lily got out. Where are we, I thought I would be staying at my fathers house. She questioned the driver as she looked up towards the top of the building.

Your father will be going out of town for a while and since you will be working at Crawford Industries a few blocks away he thought it would be more convenient for you to use one of the apartments they have for visiting clients. The chauffer explained as he unloaded her luggage from the car. Lily wondered why he knew all of this and she didn’t, her father didn’t bother to mention it her himself.

The chauffer showed her up to the twenty-fourth floor. When she got off the elevator, the hallway went right or left. She could only see there was two doors each way. There’s only four apartments on this floor, they must be very large apartments. Lily commented.

Yes, I believe they are. The chauffer answered. They turned left off the elevator and took the only door on the right side. The chauffer opened the door to the apartment Lily stepped inside. She was amazed there was nothing but windows. It was a huge two-bedroom apartment, with white carpeting and white furniture. Lily decided she was going to be afraid to touch anything she might get it dirty. Lily was use to country life in Arizona outside of Phoenix. The chauffer brought the rest of her luggage into the apartment. Do you know which bedroom you would like? The chauffer asked.

No, I haven’t looked at them yet. You can just leave my bags there. Lily responded.

Lily continued to look out the windows. Her view overlooked most of the city it was amazing.

Your father said he will pick you up here for dinner at seven pm. If you don’t need anything else, I will go. He said as he was walking towards the door.

No, I’m fine. Thank you. Lily said. She turned to watch him leave. Then she continued to look around the apartment. She found the master bedroom. At least it isn’t white too. She said out loud. This room was actually warm with yellow walls and yellow flowered comforter and drapes, white carpeting though.

Lily unpacked her clothes then lying down on the bed. Just for a few minutes. She said to herself. The next thing she knew there was knocking at the front door. Lily, are you in there? She could hear someone say, as she woke up slowly. Coming. She finally yelled. When she finally opened the door, there stood her father in a black tux. Here she was in the wrinkled dress she wore all day and her hair was a mess
