You’re not supposed to be doing that, you know."

Michael turned from the perceiving globe to face Stephan. I need to see her.

Stephan put his hand on Michael’s shoulder. You did what the Elders told you to do, your assignment’s over. Has been for a long time.

I can’t seem to stop thinking about her. I watch her … she lives on those twenty-four hours. I can’t understand it. Usually when the Elders grant a wish, the human is better for it. But no matter how hard she tries, no other human seems to take any interest in her. It’s like she doesn’t exist. Michael sat down onto the white couch then dropped his head in his hands. Her dog Bodie, who is her only friend in the world, isn’t going to make it much longer. I’m afraid what she might do when he’s gone.

Stephan pushed his long blond hair back. Why does it bother you so much? She’s an ordinary, plain human. Not even that much to look at. You gave her what she wished for; not every human gets their wish.

You’re so shallow, you know that? Michael glared up at his friend.

What, because I can recognize she’s plain? It’s not derogatory, it’s the truth.

She’s not plain. She’s extraordinary.

You sound like you’re in love. Stephan leaned up against the wall as he put his hands into his pockets.

Michael looked back to the floor, clasping his hands together. I think I am.

Stephan’s ice blue eyes grew wide. You know that’s impossible.

No, it’s not. Just … improbable.
