The Streets Of Nashville - Lee Clayton

    PART ONE

    Words And Poems

    Pages 4-49

    When you’re hot, you’re hot.

    When you’re not, you’re not.

    Jerry Reed said that.

He knew what he was talking about.

Hyperspace is where the good stuff is.

    The Juice.....

    The Magic.....

    The Price is you.

    And the lovers

    and the brothers

    and the sisters

    and the family

    and the friends

    get off the buses...

    and the airplanes...

and out of their cars and pickups and vans

    every day and every night,

    every noon and every midnight

    or anywhere in between

    full of dreams,

carrying their guitar and copies of their songs,

    asking people:

    Where’s Music Row?

    Music Row

Imperfect people rising to the level of greatness.

The essence of Music Row is that it is a chance

for a lot of people that otherwise would have no

    chance at all.

Row Wisdom #1. Put out or get out.

Row Wisdom #2. If you’ve got the money honey I’ve got the time.

Hotel Music Row is like Hotel California in that if you ever get checked in, you can never leave.

    The waves come

    The waves go

    The deep barely moves

I’m a lifer on the Row

I ran away a few times

    But I always came back

    It’s the ambience

    The Row is airtight

Row Wisdom #3. There’s always room for greatness.

    The moments are brief

    The memories are forever

It’s seven fifty-four p.m., Sunday, the second day of January 1983.

I finish my beer at Bogey’s, slip out the door and ease over to Big White (that’s my car). I unlock the door, get in, sit down and start the engine. It’s cold, the engine and the weather.

The light drizzle freezes as it splatters on the windshield

    like a million tiny teardrops.

We’ve been lucky this winter, but I’ve got a feeling.

I get lots of feelings, I’m a sensitive man.

Tonight, like a million other nights,

I’ve driven the city from the North to the South to the East to the West

looking for somebody to talk to.

Looking for somebody to spend a little bitty piece of my life with.

Sometimes it seems I have spent my entire life looking for somebody to talk to.

Looking for somebody to spend a little bitty piece of my life with.

    This is the City.

    The Naked City.

    Nashville, Tennessee.

Home of the Grand Ole Opry,

    Music City U.S.A.

There are a million stories in this country berg

    and I’m one of them.

    I’m a songwriter,

    Nashville is my beat.

As a drunkard reaches for his
