WHO SHOULD READ THIS?
Business is going to need an influx of dynamic achievers to meet the demands of the future. However, achievers are not born; they are developed.
Simply stated, my purpose is to assist people on all rungs of the business, government and other organizational ladder to discover the dimensions of flexible, effective, personal and professional development. We need people with an achievement mentality at every level of every organization. Organizations need people with an achievement attitude.
My goal is to help you learn how to inspire and motivate yourself and others toward shared goals. You will discover new insights into the value of teamwork, and how you can be a leader on your team, regardless of your specific function.
This book is for you if. . .
** You want to position yourself as a competent, credible, and upwardly mobile professional who is capable of inspiring others to consistently achieve better results, even in the face of adversity.
** You have a genuine desire to be a more effective leader, regardless of your present business, organization or governmental function.
** You have a strong desire to build your own potential.
** You have a desire to assist others in developing their capabilities.
** You want to help create a dynamic climate in your organization, which challenges and expands the leadership and learning opportunities.
** You want to accelerate the process of achievement for yourself and your co-workers.
** As a business leader, you want your people to become achievers.
If you want more out of life, or your organization, and if you desire to create new opportunities for yourself and your co-workers and others, this can cause a change for you.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
A.C.H.I.E.V.E.M.E.N.T., as presented in this book, is a flexible system of creative, personal and professional development. It is a multi-purpose approach to leadership, customer-orientation and work relationships. The acronym is quite simple:
A ATTITUDE
C COMMUNICATION
H HONESTY
I IMAGE
E EFFICIENCY
V VISION
E EXTRA EFFORT
M MOTIVATION
E ENTHUSIASM
N NEGOTIATION
T TEAMWORK
I firmly believe that only the businesses and governments (and people within those organizations), regardless of their current position, who can adapt decisively to these changes will be able to meet the coming challenge.
It is imperative that specific A.C.H.I.E.V.E.M.E.N.T. traits be adopted across the board, not just among those in traditional leadership
or managerial functions. Too much in today's world is changing for outdated thinking to endure.
High achievement people and companies can accomplish a new level of profitability with a combination of strategic thinking, teams and alliances, policy implementation and a motivating internal culture.
ACCELERATING your A.C.H.I.E.V.E.M.E.N.T. or those of your employees can narrow the gap between management and non-management in the business, governmental and the professional world. More than gap-narrowing, these strategies can help people think in terms of competitive teamwork, customer satisfaction, continuous learning and innovation.
In business, government and other organizations, productivity gains from can result in far more efficient use of inventory, reduced squandering of resources and higher caliber work, plus more productive relationships with customers.
For employees, the appeal must be to satisfy higher needs — those in the areas of commitment, social interaction, achievement and self-respect.
A FINAL NOTE
A.C.H.I.E.V.E.M.E.N.T. is not just a practical philosophy for giving people a feeling of participation, empowerment and self-respect. There is a more crucial reason. Only those courageous businesses, governments and organizations who successfully tackle today's problems with tomorrow's solutions will have the capabilities to deal with change.
Where will you be five years from today, personally and organizationally? Ten years from today?
You can make a significant difference for your life or those of your employees, both personally and professionally by reading and following the suggestions herein.
Chapter 1
ATTITUDE DETERMINES YOUR ALTITUDE
LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST
Achievement means many wonderful, positive things. Achievement can mean personal prosperity: a fine home, vacations, travel, new things, financial security, giving your loved ones maximum advantages. It can mean more productivity from people.
Achievement can also mean winning admiration, leadership, being looked up to by people in your business and social life.
Achievement can mean freedom: freedom from worries, fears, frustrations and failure.
Achievement can mean self-respect. It can provide a base for continually finding real happiness and satisfaction from life. Achievement can mean that you are able to do more for those who depend on you.
Achievement should be your life-goal, no matter what you do for a living!
However, you don't have to be told that there are plenty of negative forces, which come against you in the form of turndowns, conflicts and barriers. You don't always have control over the negatives; still, you can determine your attitude.
One of the most startling discoveries of life happens when you realize that you have the power to choose what kind of day you are going to have. Each day comes to you neutral: it is neither up nor down. You choose whether you will be positive or negative.
The mood of your day is not set by circumstances, by other people, by tasks you have to do, by events that happen along the way. It is set by one thing — your attitude!
You may not always be able to control what happens to you, but you can always control the way you react to what happens.
Achievement is a strong word with a rich heritage. It comes from the Latin ad and caput; A POSITIVE ATTITUDE FUELS ACHIEVEMENT
meaning to head
or to reach the top.
The word chief
has the same root. Modern dictionaries define achievement attaining, or affecting a desired result.
An achievement attitude comes from a combination of two deep, inner convictions:
(1) Be captivated by an ideal.
True achievement springs from a strong belief that something is worth doing to the best of your
