Praise music from the sanctuary next door reverberated pleasantly through the walls of the fellowship hall as Stacy opened a tray of blueberry muffins and set it neatly down on the counter next to the coffee dispenser. Humming along as she worked, Stacy arranged a handful of wooden coffee stirs artfully in a Styrofoam cup. Preparing Harbor Christian Church’s complimentary Sunday coffee service alone still felt strange after years of doing it together with her best friend, and Stacy couldn’t help but feel a pang of resentment. It was hard not to feel as if Amber had abandoned her by getting married straight out of high school. The sound of the congregation singing grew suddenly louder, startling Stacy and interrupting her thoughts. She whirled around to glance at the door, and her heart began to pound when she realized that, after a summer’s worth of futile attempts, she was alone in a room with Amber’s dad, Mr. McCormick.

Ever since her encounter with Mr. McCormick on Amber’s wedding day, Stacy had waited in vain for something else to happen between them. With Amber married and no longer living at home, excuses to be alone with Mr. McCormick had all but dried up.
