Fiorimonde’s Necklace

Yolande kept her eyes averted while she tended to her vain mistress, but of course it was impossible not to notice Princess Fiorimonde’s shining golden hair, lithe figure, and the milky whiteness of her skin—especially at the hollow of her graceful neck. To notice the princess's exquisite beauty was to be struck blind to her less appealing characteristics, although Yolande suspected that she was the only soul in all the kingdom—if not all the world—who was aware of her mistress's less than noble qualities. The young ladies' maid mentally counted each stroke of the brush as she worked in silence.

After 100 brushstrokes, she would braid the princess's hair and finally make her escape from the dark tower room. As for the Princess, she paid little mind to the woman grooming her as she admired her reflection in the mirror of her ornate dressing table. Fiorimonde touched her fingers to her rosy, full lips and smirked to herself, looking very much like a cat finishing off a saucer of cream.

The princess leaned over slightly, disturbing Yolande's brushing rhythm. She opened the top drawer of the dressing table and withdrew a bejeweled hat pin and a little glass vial with a curious serpent figurine for a stopper. She held each up to her eyes in turn and examined them closely, as if searching for signs of tampering.
