“Before I was made a vampire,” Audrina began. “I was a cambion. Do you know what that is?”

“Not entirely,” Asher said. “It’s something to do with an incubus, I believe.”

“Yes, that’s just a part of it,” she replied. “It’s rather complicated, but I’ll try to simplify things a bit. An incubus and a succubus cannot procreate between the two of them. It’s usually a very involved process when the two of them decide that they want to reproduce. It means taking the sperm from a human male by the succubus and then passing it on to the incubus. The incubus, in turn, mates with a human female using the borrowed sperm. The human female nearly always becomes pregnant. This is what happened in my case. Normally, the children born of these unions do not breathe or carry a pulse, although they appear to be human in every other way.

“Something happened with me, though. When I was born, I drew breath and I had a pulse...."

Chapter One

A SOFT KNOCK came from the door of Audrina's office.

Come in, she called.

A rather attractive young man entered and placed a fat manila envelope on her desk. We did quite well tonight, he said, smiling. Of course, that's becoming more the norm these days.

Yes, Philip, Audrina laughed. It is, and I so love the feeling of success. Don't you?

Absolutely! he agreed enthusiastically. Remember, I'm ready to help if you ever decide you want to open the club during the day! I think we'd do a bang-up business.

Yes, yes, Philip, Audrina smiled indulgently at him. "I am well aware of your feelings about keeping Vamp Club open during the day. But think about what I have said in the past. One of the many things that makes us so special and sought after is the fact that we are only open from dusk to dawn. If it had not been for that horrible movie, I might even have called the club Dusk to Dawn instead of Vamp Club."

I know, Audrina, he acquiesced. That's why you're the boss. You've got a cracker jack sense of business.

Shaking her head at him in amusement, she smiled again. You have such a way with words, Philip, she said. Now go home and get some rest. With all of the Halloween festivities coming up, things are going to be crazy around here. I have even thought of taking on a couple of new staff members for this month. You know how popular New Orleans is during the month of October. I really do not want to work you to death.

Oh, you know how much I love my job, Philip replied. Besides, if you work me to death, you can always just make me like you and it won't matter.

Again, she laughed. Philip was one of very few humans who knew what she really was. She trusted him completely, though. He had come to work for her straight out of college with degrees in both business and management. Not only was he terrific at his job, but he was very open-minded and would never betray her.
