About the Authors
I’d like to thank:
Carol. It was a conversation with her that inspired this book. Carol installed a stair lift, fought her emphysema, and enjoyed her social life.
Susan. She installed a lift for her father. This is the most common way that I see stair lifts purchased… people looking out for their parents.
Harold and Marian. They installed a stair lift to get to their 2nd level. Shortly after, they installed another stair lift for the basement! It’s a big help with laundry.
Janice. Her new stair lift allowed her to move her bed out of the living room. Now it’s back in her upstairs bedroom!
Eugene. He made the conscious decision to move up rather than move out.
Elisabeth. She convinced her proud husband that a stair lift was needed. Now he uses it every day.
Theresa. Her sister needed a lift and she took action. Now she knows her sister is safe in her 2-story home.
Ellie. She sees the importance of her stair lift and tries to help others realize as well. She’s our biggest fan!
Dolly. She installed a stair lift in her guest house to make her visitors more comfortable.
Andy & Sue. They introduced me to stair lifts 30+ years ago.
CHAPTER 1 - IS A STAIR LIFT RIGHT FOR YOU?
In This Chapter:
• Saving your strength
• Getting rid of anxiety
• Preventing injuries
• Avoiding a costly move
• Ensuring a loved one’s comfort
From an early age, we climb. The attempt to test our physical bodies and rise higher and higher is a natural instinct. As toddlers we hit that developmental milestone and we’re off, scrambling up furniture and onto laps and counters. As kids on the playground we climb as high as we can, waving triumphantly at our friends from the top of the jungle gym. And as young adults we crest the mountains of our lives through perseverance and stamina. We remember the scene in Rocky
when he reaches the top of that giant staircase and raises his arms in victory, and we cheer along with him for living his dream.
When we are strong and able, stairs are helpful to us. They are merely the means to an end, a way to get to a new level, to enjoy a different view, to
