About this ebook

Ever wondered what we are in this world for? Why do we have to work before we get money to spend? Why do people fail or succeed in life? Vanity upon vanity, offers an expository look at the Biblical Philosophy of King Solomon as recorded in Ecclesiastes covering such issues as the D.E.S.A principle he used in his research and the Previous King Principle. Hard-work, laziness, greed, investments, social life, enjoyment, wealth and death are appropriately addressed. Tall or short, rich or poor, we go through the same processes of being born; growing and dying, but why? Vanity upon vanity shows the thoughts and guidance of Solomon, who has been acclaimed to be the wisest man that ever lived.

    Chapter 1: Life is funny

Life is wonderful and the wonderfulness of life includes the difficulty of understanding what it is all about. Many people in the past may have wondered why we are here but few have been able to understand a fraction of the reason. In Ecclesiastes 8:16-17 Solomon said whenever I tried to become wise and learn what goes on in the world, I realized that you could stay awake night and day and never be able to understand what God is doing. However hard you try you will never find out. Wise men may claim to know, but they don’t In essence, it is not only difficult but also impossible to understand the meaning of life. If you must determine the meaning of life, you may wish to prepare for a very deep search. Ecclesiastes 7:24 How can anyone discover what life means? It is too deep for us, too hard to understand.

If you like, go and acquire five different PhDs but you will never understand what life is all about. Anyway, there is nothing debarring you from having your degree in life studies. Many Philosophers have come and gone but what they left behind are mere unproven and usually contradictory theories of life based on their own limited understanding and belief systems.

Solomon operated The D.E.S.A. principle as recorded in Ecclesiastes 1:13 I Determined that I would Examine and Study All the things that are done in this world... Determine: Examine: Study: All. (DESA). Is it really possible to examine and study all events and occurrences in life? Can these be achieved by one finite mind? Yet Solomon engaged himself in this arduous task and concluded that all is vanity. It is like adding one hundred Zeros: your answer will still be Zero. However, it is not impossible to determine the adventure of finding the meaning of life. You can determine but that does not give the answer.

Does life have any meaning? Solomon, the Philosopher King said in Ecclesiastes 1:2-6 It is useless, useless, ...Life is useless, all useless. You spend your life working and labouring. What do you have to show for it? Generations come and generations go, but the world stays just the same. The sun still rises, and still goes down, going wearily back to where it must start all over again. The wind blows south, the wind blows north round and round and back again. From the above, we can easily see that Solomon became frustrated at his enterprise of discovering the purpose of life. He said it is useless. Life keeps going on in cycles. He noticed that the sun even had an uninteresting routine of rising and going down daily. Solomon wondered in his heart why the sun did not just stay put in one place instead of going and coming. It is not only the sun but the wind too! Why all these merry-go-round? He noted that generations come and go. Why is it not that one generation will be left here on earth instead of people being born and others dying?

What is the purpose of life? Have you ever stopped to ask your conscience this question? Do you have the answer? Is it different from what Solomon discovered? In fact, the nothingness of the equation of labour aggrieved Solomon. He noted that man would work his head off and yet have nothing to show for it. Really, it is a useless effort to try finding out the meaning of life because the more you do the unhappier you become. Why? You will realise that all your labour, education and achievements equal Zero at the end. Oh! What a
