Katie Bradley stared at the man across from her with despair in her eyes, as if her God-given free spirit had been sucked dry by Satan himself. Only it wasn't Satan who had done it to her; it was an ordinary guy named John who possessed a medium build with messy brown shoulder-length hair pulled back into a ponytail. His brown eyes glared at her, piercing through the veil of tears that clouded her vision. Moreover, he possessed the powers to make her life miserable, a living hell. Or at least that's what he made her believe.

This relationship is getting too complicated for me. John rubbed his hand against his forehead, his face in deep concentration as he paced the living room of Katie's apartment. Your becoming pregnant wasn't supposed to happen. We only slipped up once, and I can't believe you're doing this to me! Is this your way of trying to trap me?

Anger flashed in Katie's eyes. I can't believe you just said that! How can you accuse me of purposely trying to do this to you? But unfortunately, we were both caught up in the heat of the moment, and things got carried away. You wanted it jas much as I did—and for your information, I'm just as shocked about this as you are. Did you think I wanted to be a mother during my last year in college? Katie fixed her gaze on John, frustration clouding her delicately featured face.

I'm not ready to be a father. I just started my first job at the Anderson Accounting Firm, and I can't take on the responsibility of being a parent. At least not now. Don't get me wrong, I love children and wanted to have my own someday with the right person. But I wasn't expecting to settle down this early in life. John combed his fingers through his hair, pushing it from his eyes and behind his forehead as he stood in deep concentration.

Are you saying you don't want to have this child with me? Katie's voice betrayed her desperation. 

That's not what I meant. It's just that we needed more time to see if we're compatible with each other.

If you weren't serious about me, you shouldn't have pressured me with the physical intimacy. That's what got us here in the first place.

John spun his heels to face her, piercing her with his glare. Pressure you! You're the one who wanted us to spend so much time alone at your place. What did you think was going to happen when we started kissing? I'm not some robot . . . Admit it, you were the one that caused this whole problem.

There was an awkward silence as they struggled to keep the conversation civil. Katie could feel the wall of tension rising between them.

Well, there isn't much I can do about it now. I can't play God and stop the birthing process, Katie said with a gloomy look.

John's gaze drifted away. His voice lowered. You have options.

Katie's eyes grew wide as her mind refused to acknowledge his words. What did you just say? She shook her head. I'm going to pretend I didn't hear the words that came out of your mouth . . .

Katie would have never predicted her relationship with John would have turned out this way. Sure, she had a reputation of being impulsive when dating guys, sometimes even being the first to approach a good-looking guy. If someone tried to criticize one of her traits, being shy wasn't one of them. Yet, for some strange reason, she felt drawn to seek a guy's attention. The thrill of being loved and receiving affection from a man fulfilled a deep longing in her heart, something going to church hadn't been able to do. Maybe it had something to do with the fact she didn't read the Bible often or pray much like her sisters did.

But while Katie's sisters would scold her for being unladylike, even suggesting she was acting like a trashy woman of the trade, she ignored their criticisms. Instead, she accepted that she was unique and would be nothing like her three older sisters. While she shared their traits of great taste in fashion and a goal to be successful in life, her love life was an entirely different story—the exact opposite of theirs. 

Megan, Lauren, and Tiffany presented themselves as upright women of God. They had a sophistication that generated the respect of Christian men around them. Their social conduct was prim and proper, befitting for a Christian woman.

But Katie found that too conservative and boring for her tastes. Life needed enjoyment, and being around a guy seemed to fulfill her heart's desires. At least temporarily.
