The Moment of Truth - Kelsey MacBride

    Chapter 1

Sam timidly followed Joshua into the crowded Japanese restaurant. She had driven by Minato's several times but had never eaten there. The fine establishment was popular in Orange County for its succulent seafood dishes and exquisite sushi with prices to match. Her pace quickened as she tried to keep up with Joshua as he made a sharp left, passing several bamboo-lined cubicles with wooden tables.

Everything had happened so quickly. Thirty minutes ago, Sam had been wallowing in the anguish of missing her audition. And now everything seemed so surreal as she followed Mr. Davis, or Joshua as he preferred to be called, to meet the infamous Mary Turner.

She could feel a nervous energy shoot through her body as Mary angled her brows at Joshua as he led her up to the table.

Mary, you're not going to believe this, but I've found the perfect singer for our group. His voice bubbled with enthusiasm like a kid discovering apple pie for the first time. Meet Samantha ...

Brown, she added and gave Mary a timid smile.

Ah, yes, Samantha Brown. He turned toward Sam. Samantha, this is Mary Turner. His gaze returned to Mary. She's the singer Stephanie mentioned. You must listen to her. I've never heard anything like it. She sings with so much passion it gives me the goosebumps.

Mary studied Sam for a moment as if she were modeling for a discount department store catalog. Then she drew out a hand. Nice to meet you.

Sam shook her hand vigorously. The privilege is all mine. I can't believe I'm shaking hands with you. I love your voice, especially when you sang Lead me to Calvary; I saw your band perform two years ago in Anaheim, and I ended up buying tickets last minute, so I ended up sitting towards the back. She sucked in a breath. Oh, my gosh, my family won't believe I met you face to face. She whipped out her cell phone. Do you mind if we take a picture together? My friends are never going to believe this.

Mary angled her brows and looked at Joshua as if that had been the sole purpose of Sam's audition.

Sam handed her camera to Joshua and posed next to her without hesitation.

After taking the picture, Mary pointed to the chair across from her. Please, have a seat.

I hope I'm not intruding on your dinner, Sam said as she took a seat next to Joshua.

Of course not. Joshua looked at Mary for approval. "Finding our next singer is a top priority, isn't it?

Mary gave him a half-smile. Mr. Davis is right. You don't need to worry about interrupting us. If Joshua, I mean Mr. Davis, thinks you're the perfect singer, then I must listen to your voice. Please, sing me your favorite song.

Sam's eyes widened as they darted around the crowded restaurant. Right here? In front of all these people? She could feel a rumbling in her stomach.

Sure, why not? I'm sure they wouldn't mind the live entertainment. Mary gave her a thin smile. You said you wanted to be a famous star, didn't you?

    Well, yes.

    Then let's hear it.

Mary kept a serious face as Sam cleared her throat. A ripple of nervous energy traveled down her spine as she mentally rehearsed the first notes. The thought of auditioning before a famous singer intimidated her. Would she be able to land every note
