Chapter 1

Joshua couldn’t help following every moment of Nicole’s pillowy lips as she sang the final chorus to one of the band’s latest hits. They moved with the sexiness of an experienced bachata dancer, and he could only wonder what they would feel like pressed against his own. While it wasn’t in his nature to be obsessive or perverted, he couldn’t deny his natural desire to appreciate every sensual attribute of a sexy woman. And there was no doubt in his mind Nicole qualified as one.

Stop it, Joshua. You know you can’t have her. Mary would kill you if she found out you were flirting with Nicole.

He tried to cage his desire for the beauty standing across from him. But he knew it was going to be an uphill battle. Fasting for 30 days would have been easier than controlling his attraction to beautiful women, especially ones with passionate personalities.

While he wasn’t sure how passionate Nicole was, something about her reserved and sophisticated manners intrigued him. As if she had come from a long lineage of Chinese nobility.

Three days ago, she had approached him about helping her master the dramatic pauses and high vocal range required throughout the band’s newest song. Without hesitation, he had jumped at the opportunity to spend extra one on one time with her, hoping he could eventually win her heart over. But with the businesslike attitude Nicole gave him, he could tell it was going to be a challenge to find a crack in the fortress around her heart.

That’s good. Joshua drew his lips into a disarming smile. I could feel the emotion in your singing, and the power is good. But I sense a little strain in your voice.

She nodded at him and waited for his professional advice.

We never want to overreach the limits of our voice. You saw what happened to Sam, and that’s something we can’t have to happen to you. He rested a hand on top of her forearm and noticed how dainty her wrists were. You’re one of the valuable members of the band. For a moment, Joshua felt her arm quiver before she drew it closer to her body.

I’m trying to sing relaxed, but I’m having trouble belting the high notes. Nicole acted as if nothing had happened.

But he knew his touch had sparked something inside her. That he was sure of. He pressed his luck further and stepped closer, resting a hand on the small of her back while the other lightly touched her stomach. A faint sigh escaped her lips.

You need to breathe deeply.

Without thinking, the assertive side of his personality took over, and now he saw it as a game to challenge her resistance. You won’t be able to sing as high in the belt voice as you would with the legit voice. The most important thing you want to remember is breathing and keeping the back of the throat wide. Your natural tendency is to close off the voice when belting the high notes. Now I want you to try it again but sing forward from the front of the mouth.
