The Secret Summoning - Natalie Black

    ~ Vol. 1 – Double Edged ~

Alright, that should do it. Once it reboots you should be all set. Mark shifted from under the desk to the plush leather chair, the computer doing its shutdown routine. He was the on-site IT technician for StarCorp, and fixing computers was the sum total of his professional life. Not exactly the most glamorous of careers, but hey, it paid the bills. It was days like this, though, that really brightened his week and made him think that coming into the office might just be worth it. The front desk receptionist, Lauren, was stunningly beautiful. A classic beauty, if ever there was one. She had dark hair and blue eyes and the kind of body that, even in business attire, could make a priest do a double take. In Mark's eyes, Lauren was the best looking woman in the company, hands down.

Lauren smiled and leaned down to press the power button on her computer, in the process unknowingly pushing her breasts against Mark's shoulder. I can't thank you enough, Mark. This stupid machine just never seems to work right. She laughed a laugh that gave Mark the shivers, as a warm wave of happiness spread over him.

He grinned to himself. That's probably because of all the malware sites about celebrities you keep visiting when people think you're working. He could easily block the sites, of course, and it was corporate policy to restrict all personal web browsing that resulted in significant wastes of time, but Mark had always kept her computer open without restriction. If it weren’t for her bad habits and complete lack of computer skills, he'd never have any reason to come up here. And it was just about the only thing he looked forward to.

Uh, you're welcome, Lauren. Happy to help. The screen finally showed the login prompt. He stood up and smiled, See? All set.

Lauren flashed him a stunning smile and sat down, typing her id and password, then sighed in relief when the desktop came up without any signs of the popup ads that had been plaguing her all morning. You're a life saver. She smiled at Mark and his heart fluttered.

He gathered his tablet and started to walk away, but then paused.

Hey, Lauren, um, if you're not busy after work, maybe you want to catch a drink? I mean, the bar right across the street does a killer happy hour.

She looked up at him with her best sympathetic smile, one reserved for letting men down easy – something she was all too accustomed to.

Oh, I'm sorry Mark, I have an appointment today, but maybe next week, ok?

He nodded, a bit dejectedly, Yeah, sure thing. See-ya, Lauren.

He sighed deeply as he moved towards the elevator. He was tired; it was always the same thing with Lauren. He'd already asked her out six times now, and every time she had an appointment, or a meeting, a sick relative, or something. Last time she said she had to take her dog to the vet – that was a new one, at least. Before that it was a sale at her favorite store. He stepped into the elevator and heaved another sigh. He looked at himself in the reflective metal of the back of the elevator door. Sure, his hairline wasn't quite where it used to be, and his glasses had gotten a bit thicker in the last few years, but he was still a reasonably attractive guy, had always been in decent shape, and he was certainly smarter than most of the guys in the office. Why wouldn't she want to go out with him? All he needed was that one shot, he thought, and he could prove he was worth her time. There were other girls in the office, of course, but none of them held the allure that Lauren did.

The elevator opened to the dark, cold basement and he plodded towards the server room.

Danny, the network tech, was already inside, working on the system. Hey chief, why the long face?

Mark grumbled and went to the back of the room, sitting down at one of the terminals.

    Aw, shit, Lauren again?

    Yeah...

Give up on that piece, Marky. She's just a bimbo with big tits to keep the suits happy while she answers phones. She’s got nothing good for you. Just forget her.

Mark shook his head, It's not that easy, man. I think about her all the time! She’s got it all. If she'd just go out with me once...

Yeah, but she won't. She's into like, surfer dudes and club rats. You're not her scene. Just be happy you get to eye-fuck her once a day. Could be worse – she could work somewhere else entirely

Mark clicked away at the terminal keyboard, I guess. I just think I have a shot with her, you know? If she would just say yes once – that’s all it would take.

Keep dreaming, brother. Danny smirked and turned back to his own work. A few seconds letter he let out a loud Fuck!

Mark jumped in his seat, alarmed. What is it??

I don’t know! Everything is down. Some sort of network failure. We lost all of the hubs. Can you head up to four and start the reset sequence? I'll handle the primaries.

Mark sighed and stood, Yep, no sweat.

The network room on the fourth floor was a cramped little utility closet situated between the bathrooms. It was dank and smelled constantly. Mark wiggled his way into the back of the room to get at the hub, and started the lengthy reset process to get the network back on line. He rested his head back against the wall and waited, watching the tiny lights on the front display flicker from red to green one at a time.

Hey, Lauren! A voice cut through the silence.

He blinked. Stood up. Where did that voice come from?

    Hi, Marjorie.

It was Lauren’s sweet voice. He could hear her through the ventilation. She must be in the ladies' room! The other voice was Marjorie, the woman from Accounts.

    Big night tonight, right?

You know it! Dale said he was going to take me to dinner, then dancing, then to his condo on the beach.

Dinner? Beach house? She said she had an appointment! All lies...Mark fumed.

Oh, sounds like someone's going to get laid tonight!

Lauren's laughter echoed through the vent. You know it! I can't wait. Dale's such a cutie, too. But don't spread this around, OK? I don't want it getting back to anyone, especially Mark.

    Mark? The nerdy IT guy?

Yeah. He’s always helping me out with techy stuff. If he thinks I'm seeing someone else, he'll restrict my Internet and I might actually have to do some work around here. Right now, I just flash him a little cleavage, smile a lot, and he lets me browse whatever I want.

Mark growled, clenching his eyes shut. How stupid he'd been! To think he had a chance with her, while she was playing him for a fool! He couldn’t believe what he was overhearing.

Doesn't he keep asking you out?

Yeah, but I always make excuses. He’s asked me like five or six times now. One day I'll have to go get a drink with him and flirt a little bit, then say I have a headache or something and go home early. That way, he’ll think he's winning me over while I get to keep playing online at work all day. Nothing like being able to shop online and get paid to do it!

He could her Marjorie sigh, If I had tits like yours, I'd play him too. I’d play everyone! I wish my Internet was unrestricted. I can't even see my home email.

Lauren laughed softly. You just have to know how to work the system, and the losers that keep it going.

He heard the bathroom door close, and the voices faded. So that's what she thought of him. He was just some nerd, a loser to tease and get her way with. Flash a little smile and she can get whatever she wants, huh? Mark’s mind was clouded with anger and disbelief. He stormed out of the utility room and headed back to the basement.

Danny looked up as he came back. Whoa, you’re done already?

    Fucking Lauren...you won’t believe it...

    What? What now?

I heard her in the bathroom talking to Marj from accounts. She's been playing me! I heard it all straight from her mouth. She's keeping me on the hook so I keep her network access unrestricted! I'm such an idiot!

Danny stood up and put a hand on Mark's shoulder. Calm down, chief. It’s just like I told you. She ain’t even worth the time. No biggie. Just turn her security settings to max and set her station to high alert. Every time she even types in a restricted site, we'll get a red flag. We can get her fired in a week.

Yeah, but, what about the last year of her ‘work’? All the open network access, all the prohibited sites that she’s been surfing freely, that'll all come back to me!

Danny tightened his lips and nodded, Yeah, you’re right. It probably would. Would be more than a bit hard to explain why she's been open-access all this time.

Fuck. Fuck this. I'm going home. I don't feel well.

Danny patted him on the shoulder, Yeah, man. Go get a beer, then chill out. It's Friday, right? Just take the weekend to re-center and get your priorities straight again. Forget her, man. She's just a whore that doesn't even take her clothes off, right?

Mark grumbled as her grabbed his keys. Whatever. See you Monday.

    *****

Mark went to the pub down the street from the office and had a beer. Then another. And another. He was sitting at the bar, deep into his fourth mug, when a stranger sat beside him. Looks like you're having a bad day.

Mark looked over at him, eyeing him cautiously. The guy was in a faded pair of jeans and a rugged flannel shirt, a backpack resting on the floor by his stool, his hiking boots showing significant wear and tear. Looked like a typical drifter-type, not completely out of place in this town.

Yeah, what makes you say that? Mark asked as he took another chug from his mug.

The guy chuckled, That's a lot of beer before two in the afternoon. Even if it is a Friday - A bit early to be getting a head start on the weekend, no?

Mark sighed and shrugged, Yeah, I guess it was a bad day. He tipped the rest of his beer back and signaled for another.

The guy reached his hand out, I'm Felix.

    Mark shook it lazily. Mark.

So what's got you down, Mark? Get fired or something?

    Nah. Girl trouble.

Felix smiled and shook his head, Ain’t it always? Women are trouble on two legs. Born trouble, and they only get worse.

Yeah, guess so. Mark slipped a five-dollar bill across the bar to the tender as he laid the next full mug down in front of him. He didn't catch Felix eyeing the contents of his wallet.

I'll tell you what, my man. I can make you an offer that'll solve all your trouble.

Oh, uh, no, I'm not gay.

Felix laughed. Holy shit, no, that's not what I meant! He reached down and fished through his backpack, pulling out a worn hardcover book. This is a book of magic. Ancient druidic shit. My ex used to be a Wiccan high priestess and I stole this and some other stuff when she tossed me out.

Oh yeah? Mark raised an eyebrow, looking down at the book through his beer-filled haze, slightly intrigued.

Yeah. I've done some of the little spells in here, for like, luck and shit. It seems to work. Like, every single time. I've hitchhiked halfway across the country without a problem, using stuff from this book. There's big stuff in here too, charms for like, love and money and all that, but I've been kind of afraid to use it. The truth was Felix bought the book not two hours ago at a consignment shop for five dollars, but he wasn't about to let a good chance for a few quick bucks pass him by.

Love spells, eh? Mark was becoming hooked. He was in a low place. He could imagine being able to wave his hands and make Lauren, or any girl, fall in love with him. It seemed like exactly what he needed.

Look, I'm flying out tomorrow, making my way to Europe. I hear things are a lot nicer out there, but I want to travel light, so I’m getting rid of everything I can. Besides, they got like, morality laws and stuff out there. I don't want this confiscated from me at the airport or anything. So I'll tell you what, I'll sell it to you.

Mark blinked, looking up at Felix's face. How much?

    How about... a hundred?

Mark coughed, spitting out a sip of his beer, Dollars?

Yeah, dollars! C'mon man, this stuff can help you out. Better than any self-help seminar, right? Just do the magic for love, and your girl problems vanish! No more two PM drinking. You’ll have exactly what you want.

Mark thought about it, the alcohol severely clouding hiss judgment. If I can win Lauren over, it'll make this all worth it. He fished out his wallet and laid a hundred dollar bill on the bar. All right. You got a deal.

Felix slid the book to him and picked up the money. You will not regret this. I hope the book brings you as much fortune as it did me. He gave a winning smile, thinking of the $95 he just made, then patted Mark on the back and walked out.

Good luck in Europe! Mark called, picking the book up and turning it over in his hands.

Good luck with the ladies, my friend! With that Felix walked out, whistling to himself.

    *****

Mark finished his beer and hurried home to start reading. At first, he was completely unimpressed. The book was a lot of gibberish about the ‘right hand path’ and the ‘threefold rule’, mixed in with crunchy philosophical crap that just held no interest for him. He found himself skimming, skipping entire chapters, waiting for something good, until he finally came to the section on incantations near the back. Tucked into the pages were a few pieces of faded yellow paper, with some sort of diagrams and instructions handwritten on them. These must be the really powerful spells! He tossed the book to the side to study the papers more closely. At the top of one said the words Sexual Summoning. This was clearly the right one. He read carefully, making notes of ingredients and procedures. It all sounded a
