INTRODUCTION

A young man lounges on an isolated park bench near the edge of the woods. An older man passes by and they briefly exchange glances. A minute later, the older man is back, passing more slowly this time. The younger man casually spreads his legs a little and touches the inside of his thigh. Then, as if nothing is going on, he gets up and walks away. The older man sits down on the bench right where the younger man had been sitting. They exchange glances again. The young man strolls down a path into the woods. The older man gets up and follows. . .

In a video booth in the back of a porn shop, a man spends his lunch break watching gay movies. As he watches the action on screen his attention is drawn to a sound beside him. A small window on the side of the booth opens up and a man’s face appears at it. His mouth is open. The man puts some more tokens in the video machine and stands up, pulling down his pants. . .

This may seem like a strange chapter heading for a book about gay cruising, but sadly many of the readers of this book feel ashamed of their desires. Centuries of discrimination, demonization, and persecution of the gay lifestyle have left deeply engrained prejudices that are hard to shake off. Progress is being made, but there’s still a long way to go. Watch the classic 1970 film The Boys in the Band to see just how self-hating gay men were only a generation ago. Sadly, some men, especially publically straight men who like to secretly have sex with other men, still hate themselves for what they do.

Brother, we’ve all been through it. Even those of us with understanding families and friends (which certainly doesn’t describe my youth!) have to struggle with accepting our identities. It’s normal, it’s part of developing into who we are, and it’s a work in progress until the day we die.
