    One day in my childhood, my mother decided that I, being a responsible first born, was way too serious.

    You need a sense of humor, she told me. And she worked on that.

    She may have overdone it.

    The many adventures that come with living in rural Colorado make me laugh. And I hope you’ll laugh, too.

    I’m glad Mom put her shoulder into this serious problem -well, the problem of being serious - and taught me to live lightly and enjoy the moments. I’m glad my dear husband has the perseverance to tolerate what he doesn’t always understand.

    And I’m thankful for a family that has given me such a rich stream of stories.

    Chicken Chasin’

    Now I like chickens as well as most people, which is hardly at all, but they have been good for some stories over the years. Growing up on a farm has given me a rich supply of chicken stories.

    My family has raised chickens for many years, enjoying fresh eggs and plump poultry meat.

    I thought it was magical to discover new eggs in the layer boxes that I had emptied the day before. Every day, a new cluster of eggs warmed the palm of my hand.

    But with the hens sometimes come the roosters. Hens lay eggs. Roosters crow at 4 am and, in some cases, turn aggressive.

    I was under the age of accountability (determined by my lack of maturity in this case) when my little sister jumped on her bike to ride around our farmyard. She had one
