    Tamed and Mated #5

I waited near the entrance of the village, my brother a few steps behind me. He wouldn't budge, and that was just as well. I knew he wasn't there for my sake, just for his own, but it fulfilled its purpose.

The guards had run ahead of us, trusting Kilan to keep me where I was. His reputation couldn't be that bad if they didn't think he would side with me. But then, I had come back of my own accord. Probably surprised them all with it, too.

I looked around myself, glancing at the caves ahead, breathing in the earthy smell of stone and the volcano in the distance. This was home, only it wasn't anymore.

The dragons living here wanted me dead. And I would go along with it, if only to make things right for the people who had been important to me once. It was a stupid plan probably, but the only one I had. I fisted my hands, waiting for the guards to return.

Saying I had no fear would have been a lie. I'd seen people executed. It wasn't a daily occurrence, but it happened. Just part of life in the village. If it was my turn, well, it was my turn. But I'd never been very strong. If I were, I would not have been in this mess in the first place. I almost smiled at the irony.

Figures emerged in front of us, shadowed by the sun behind them. I squinted my eyes. My very favorite dragon led the small group. It didn't seem like my parents were with Castor. But then, I hadn't thought they would be. Most likely they didn't think of me as their son anymore. My people were not very forgiving.

I straightened, facing Castor as he came closer. If there was one person to who I should no fear, it was him. He was almost as much at fault for all this happening as I was. Or maybe that was Jace talking in my head, telling me how he should have treated me better.

    Well.

    I banished the thought.

Castor approached me with the same self-assured smirk he always wore when things were going his way. I would have given a lot to wipe that off his face, but it wasn't my place.

Come back so soon? he asked. To be honest, I'd expected you to be a little more difficult.

I pressed my mouth into a thin line to keep myself from insulting him. Maybe I had to die, but I did not have to talk to him. I only hoped that he would not ask for an apology. No such luck.

Apologize to me, Castor said. He took another step toward me and I was tempted to walk away. It was the same urge I always got when he came too close.

My brother stepped up from behind me. He probably wanted me to apologize too. I took a deep breath. Dying for my mistakes
