    Tamed and Mated #4

The next morning I woke up to talking in the room. Hushed voices. I blinked my eyes open just a little, not wanting to alert anyone to myself. It was still dark. Grayish light fell into the room. Had to be early.

I swallowed, realizing that the warm thing I lay on was Jace's chest. I didn't remember falling asleep like this. Now I definitely had a reason to fake sleep, just to stay like this for a while without the embarrassment.

You're so cute together, someone said. I couldn't see them from where I lay, but I recognized the voice. That stupid elf. Nox.

Yeah, look at us, I thought. We're cute. Now run along.

If you think so, Jace said. His chest moved as he spoke and I wondered whether this had woken me. Please be quiet, I don't want him up, yet.

Good, fake sleep it was. Although the more awake I became, the more I really wanted some fresh painkillers. But I could deal with it for a while. I was a dragon.

Alright, Nox said. He was closer now. I had to keep myself from growling at him, suddenly feeling territorial. Just finding it a little funny that you're playing with dragons now.

    I'm not playing with him.

    You'd better not be.

Oh? Can I borrow him then? He is kind of cute.

No, Jace spoke the word at the same time that I thought it, and I loved him for it.

    You're no fun.

    Get some sleep, Nox.

Sleep? The sun is rising. Who would miss that? The leaves rustled as he sat down and I cursed the fact that we had to be sleeping in his room. I didn't really have any right to tell him to get lost. We're sending out people to look for damages in the forest. I thought you might want to go. Maybe something can yet be salvaged from your home.

A pang of guilt shot through me at the mention of Jace's home.

I took everything important with me, Jace said. Everything important, huh?
