Tamed and Mated #3
I kept looking back up at the sky as we went. Castor was still circling overhead, never too far away from us. We couldn't go fast, or we would draw attention to ourselves. Jace kept to the shadows of the trees. He was clever, as I'd known he was. I didn't know why he kept to his human form, but he did, clutching the small bundle in his hand all the time. I was itching to ask about it, but I didn't want to piss him off with me any further.
Where are we going?
I asked, hoping that he wouldn't mind me using the word 'we.'
That depends,
Jace said, never stopping, never turning around to me. How well does your boyfriend know these woods?
Can you please stop calling him my boyfriend?
I asked, sick of hearing that word come out of his mouth. Castor was the last person on earth to be my boyfriend. Especially after what he'd done to my wings. No one who felt any sort of affection for me would have done such a thing, no matter the reason.
Alright,
Jace said. But how well does he know these woods?
He paused, seeming to want an actual answer.
Not very well, I think.
It shamed me to admit that I didn't know very much about what our reckoning forces did. As a servant, I hadn't been included in anything going on outside the village. I'm sorry I'm not much help,
I said.
You've done enough.
Jace resumed walking.
You know I didn't think this would happen. I didn't plan for this. I never wanted this.
What,
Jace turned around to me. You didn't think your psychopathic mate would want to kill me for helping you?
The words took the wind out of me. I thought I could hide you.
Well, you didn't.
I swallowed. He was right. I'm sorry,
I said. I should have let him take them.
I should have manned up. But I wasn't that strong. This was why I was a servant. They had seen it even when I was just a hatchling. I wasn't suited to be a warrior.
I wasn't even strong enough to be a servant.
Take what?
Jace asked.
My wings,
I said.
Jace stared at me. What do you mean your wings?
His eyes darted to
