    Beautiful Anomaly - Mary-ellen DeLeon

    Chapter 1

Terry Smithers held the phone away from his ear as his boss continued to rant. What the hell, Terry? I need this album cover done.

Sorry man, the regular photographer is in the hospital. What do you want me to do?

Get someone who knows his way around a camera and lighting. If I have to do the damn artwork myself I will but I need photos, he growled.

There aren’t that many people who will work with you anymore, Blaze. You’ve alienated every photographer in LA.

Fuck that shit. There’s got to be one out there. Find him or you’re fired too.

Terry rolled his eyes as he heard the call disconnect. What the hell, Terry? he repeated Blaze Hunter’s words. What am I? A fucking magician?

Terry went online in search of local photographers. He called several who were available but as soon as they heard the name they either hung up or respectfully declined.

OK, this is the last damn one, Divine Photos. Hm, sounds like the exact opposite of what he needs but it’s all I have.

    He dialed the number.

Divine Photography, said a cheery voice. We’ll make you smile. How may I assist you today?

Hello, yes, this is Terry Smithers. I need some shots done for a client of ours for his latest album. It’s due to release soon and our current photographer has taken ill.

Let me see if Ms. Divine has any openings.

He waited for several minutes listening to some garbage music on hold before the receptionist came back on the line.

Ms. Divine is quite busy over the next week or two.

I’ll take anything. Blaze will have my head. I have called everyone on the West coast. Please?

    Blaze?

Terry shook his head and rolled his eyes. Yes, Blaze Hunter.

Can you hold for a few more minutes? Let me speak to Ms. Divine and see if we can reschedule something.

I understand. Thank you. Wait? What?

I’m going to ask Ms. Divine. Please hold.

    The music kicked in again.

Hm, maybe she doesn’t know his rep?

    ***

Martha hit the intercom button. Ms. Divine, I have someone on the line that needs photos for an album cover immediately. When I told him you were booked, he begged me to fit him in. I think you should do it.

Martha, I am in the dark room.

I'm aware of that Ms. Divine but he’s really desperate. And it’s for Blaze Hunter.

    That means nothing to me.

Oh my God, you don’t know Blaze? He is one of the hottest rockers around and very. You should so do this. Please? For me? I would love to get up close and personal with him.

And when am I supposed to squeeze him in. I have the dog show Saturday.

What about Sunday? I can come in and set everything up. I’ll have all the cameras prepared. Please? Martha was practically squealing.

OK, Martha, I'll do it for you. Tell him to be here Sunday morning at ten. If he is late, I won’t be here.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

    ***

Mr. Terry? It's Martha. Can your client come in on Sunday at ten?

You have got to be kidding. I have to drag his ass...

    Martha gasped.

I’m sorry. I have to drag his rear end out of bed on a Sunday morning?

That’s the best we can do. And he must be here on time. Ms. Divine is very busy and normally does not work in the studio on Sundays. Mr. Hunter should be dressed in whatever he wants in the photo. He can bring extra clothes but he must be set to go at ten.

He let out a long breath. OK, I will find a way to get him there.

Great. See you both on Sunday.

Martha giggled and rubbed her hands together after she hung up the telephone. She had been following Blaze’s career, loved his music, and would have done anything to meet the man in person. Now he was about to fall right into her lap. She could not wait for Sunday.

    ***

Meanwhile, Serafina Divine was finishing up in the dark room.

I cannot believe I have to come in here on Sunday to shoot some rock star I don’t even know, she muttered. So much for taking a day off to read that book. Read a book. Yeah right.

    ***

Sera woke to her annoying alarm on Sunday morning and grumbled about having to get up early just to take pictures of someone she knew nothing about. She made a pot of coffee, showered and dressed. Before she left her apartment, she filled her to go cup with what remained of the hot brown liquid. She drank it black, no sugar. It was what she needed to get motivated.

Martha was already at the studio when her boss arrived.

    Good morning Ms. Divine.

Could you make some more coffee? I’m almost out. And please, don’t be so cheerful. And how many times have I told you to call me Sera?

I’ll do my best, Sera, Martha whispered, knowing her boss was not a morning person.

Serafina went into the studio and sat at her desk for a moment. She noticed that Martha had already set up the lighting and a few props against a black background. She turned her chair and gazed out the large window which overlooked the city.

OK, I’m here. Get a grip. A couple of hours should be enough then I can go back home and nurse my weekend wounds.

Here’s your coffee. There’s another pot brewing just in case.

Thanks, Martha. As always, you are a God send. She glanced at her watch. It is nine fifty seven. This rock star of yours better get here soon.

As if on cue, two men stepped into the outer office. Martha heard the heavy footsteps and dashed out to greet them.

Mr. Terry and Mr. Hunter, welcome. Can I get you some coffee?

    Got anything stronger? Blaze mumbled.

    No, I'm sorry, Sir.

Don't mind him. He's not a morning person.

Neither is my boss. You two should get along just fine. Follow me.

Blaze asked, Has you boss ever done album cover shots before?

You'll have to ask her. Martha stepped into the studio and announced the arrival of their clients.

Sera was still staring out the window. She took a long sip of her coffee and turned; her eyes remained downcast. Martha had seen this many times. Her boss's demeanor always changed when she was around men.

Blaze watched as the photographer moved from behind her desk. She was wearing an oversized white shirt which could have been her boyfriend's. The sleeves were rolled up about two inches below her elbow. Under the shirt was a pair of skinny jeans. Her converse made a slight squeaking noise on the hard wood floor.

Sera lifted her eyes high enough to see one man's legs in jeans, the other in black leather. She moved toward them and extended her hand.

    Mr. Terry?

Actually, Terry is my first name.

She shot a look at Martha.

And you must be Mr. Hunter.

Let's get this over with. You'd better be good.

I can assure you Mr. Hunter, she said in a soft tone. I am better than good at what I do, although many of my subjects are animals. I'm sure you will listen better to my direction.

Is this what you're using for a back drop?

Martha spoke up. Yes, um, I set it up. I was not aware that you would be dressed in black. We can change things around.

I think we should start with what we have. Martha, change up the lights. Use the amber against the backdrop. Move the speakers to the center.

    Yes, ma'am.

Martha hurriedly moved the speakers and adjusted the lights. Without looking directly at Blaze, Sera told him where to stand.

So do you play, or just sing?

You know nothing of my music, do you?

    Never heard of you.

If looks could kill, Terry would have caught a heart attack from Blaze's glare.

I play several instruments but in concert I stick with the guitar.

Martha, don't we have a guitar in the prop room?

It's probably not a lefty, Martha answered.

All heads turned in her direction and Martha blushed.

At least someone here knows who I am.

I love your music, Martha giggled.

I can have Joe bring over a couple of yours.

    Do it, Blaze ordered.

Terry stepped out into the main office and called one of the crew to fetch Blaze's guitars.

How long will that take? Serafina asked, trying not to sound annoyed.

As long as it takes, Blaze grumbled back.

She turned away from him and grimaced. When she glanced back, her eyes met his for the briefest of moments and something awoke deep inside her. His eyes were the most magnificent shade of green she had ever seen.  She turned her eyes down quickly and blushed. Yet it wasn't fast enough. Blaze saw the heat in her stare. Just as he was about to take a step closer, she took one back.

OK, let's take a few shots with what we have. Did you bring other clothes?

Yeah, got some in the car. His eyes remained on her as he added, Martha, would you be so kind as to ask Terry to bring up the garment bag from the Hummer.

    Sera bit her lip.

    ***

The rocker had been at Divine Photos for over three hours. The back drop had been changed several times. He had posed with four different instruments and changed clothes at least as many times. Serafina sent Martha home after hour two. Terry was in the outer office making phone calls.

Why don't you unbutton your shirt a bit? she suggested.

    I will if you do.

    Her cheeks turned crimson.

And who is taking whose picture? she remarked, looking at him through the lens of her camera.

He undid three buttons revealing a bit more of his muscular chest. Her heart skipped a beat.

Now, make love to the camera.

Do you tell your animal subjects to do that? he smirked.

I usually just hold up a treat for them. Would you like a treat?

    I'd love to taste you.

She ignored the comment and snapped a few more shots.

I have an idea. Are you game?

His lips curled in a malicious grin. I hope we're thinking the same thing. Does the door lock?

Sera shook her head. I'm not that easily swayed and that is not at all what I was thinking, she lied. Take your shirt off. Put the leather jacket back on and leave it open.

Blaze did as instructed, his eyes focused on the beauty before him.  When he was done, he said, Better?

Undo the top button of your pants.

I like where this is going.

Concentrate. The word was spoken as much to herself as it was to him. Take the silver guitar, put the base at your feet and hold the neck out like so, she explained. Good, now give me that smolder.

Why Ms. Divine, are you asking me to seduce you?

I'm asking you to seduce the camera. I think we'll have enough shots for you to have some magazine worthy promo shots if you behave and do what I ask.

Getting a little domineering, aren't you?

Like I said earlier today, I'm good at what I do.

Then why can't you look at me when you speak?

I can see you just fine through the lens.

Blaze narrowed his bedroom eyes, lowered his chin, and glared straight into the camera.

    Yes, perfect, move with me.

She shot from several different angles. Nodding and commenting as she did. She directed his moves, made him follow the camera with his eyes and move his body sensually. She stepped back and took a full length shot. It was then that she noticed just how tight his stone washed jeans had become. Her tongue darted out and licked her lips. Blaze's gaze moved to her luscious mouth.

OK, I think we're done. How soon do you need proofs?

    What?

    How soon..?

    I heard. Yesterday.

I guess I'll be working all day then, she said, placing her camera on the table near the wall.

How about I take you out to lunch first?

    I don't think so.

    Do you have a boyfriend?

With her back to him, she shook her head and whispered, No.

He moved behind her and placed his hands on her hips. Then join me for lunch.

His hot breath on her neck sent a shiver down her spine which she tried desperately to ignore. Sera wiggled out of his grasp.

I have to work. Someone asked for photos at the last minute.

Then I should stay and look at them. You know, to save time, he said with a raise of his eyebrow.

    Fine.

    Fine.

    Blaze shouted, Smithers!

Terry rushed back into the studio.

Not letting his gaze leave Serafina, Blaze demanded, Go get us some lunch. We’ll be here a while.

    What should I get?

His boss's head whipped around so fast, it nearly flew off.

I’ll figure something out. Ms. Divine, do you have any restrictions?

    No red meat.

Terry gave a brief nod and backed out of the studio. Once in the elevator, he muttered, Go get lunch. What the fuck? I am not your slave! Geez, why the hell do I work for this guy?

Terry was still muttering as the elevator door opened at the first floor. He stepped out and almost ran right into Martha.

Hey, I didn’t think you’d still be here, she said. I was just coming back to make sure everything was put away.

Blaze is still up there with your boss. I think they’re going to be a while. I have been sent for lunch. What does your boss like to eat?

C’mon, I’ll take you. There’s a deli just down the road and they know how she likes her turkey Reuben.

Thank God you're here. The last thing I need is for Blaze to holler because I don’t get your boss the right food.

Martha slipped her hand into the crook of Terry’s arm and they walked out of the office building.

Mr. Hunter seems like a jerk to work for. Is he always so gruff with you?

Only Monday through Sunday, those are his worst days.

Martha laughed. You must have the patience of a saint. Although if I were his assistant, I'd put up with anything.

Most chicks.. I mean ladies think he’s all that. And to be honest, he is a nice guy. He just has this hard exterior, and he likes to play like the bad boy in public. Besides, he pays me well, and understands when I need personal time. When my girlfriend’s dad was in the hospital, he told me to take as much time as I needed. Not many bosses would do that.

I wonder why he thinks he has to be such an arse in public.

It’s the whole rock star persona; I guess.

Well, here we are. Should we grab something for ourselves as well?

Why not? We can eat in the office while they look at the shots. I had the feeling Blaze wanted to have some time alone with your boss.

    ***

Blaze and Sera sat next to each other behind her desk. She was showing him the digital shots she had taken. He was surprised at the result.

You are good at what you do, he remarked with surprise. Where are the ones with blue lighting?

I did those with an old fashioned Nikon. I’ll have to develop those later.

Why switch to film when digital is so much more adaptable?

She shrugged. I like the feel of film. And I like getting my hands dirty.

    He raised an eyebrow.

OK, so the smell of the chemicals brings back fond memories of my dad. He was a photographer as well. He used to take me in the darkroom while he was developing. I guess it’s more of a comfort thing. But you’ll love those pics as well; trust me.

    I do trust you.

You know Blaze; you’re much nicer when you don’t think anyone’s watching you.

Shut up and get me my prints, he smirked.

She reached over to the printer and pulled off the latest batch.

He flipped through the photos. Fuck I look good.

That’s because of the person behind the camera.

    Lunch is here, Martha announced.

Sera looked up. What are you doing back here?

I was coming back to check on things and ran into Terry. We got your turkey Reuben.

    You’re awesome, Martha.

Terry placed the food on the table off to the side. Martha and I are going out in the office to eat. Yell if you need anything.

He closed the door on the way out.

Alone again, Blaze growled. Are we eating here on your desk?

As long as you don’t spill anything we can.

Why is it you never look directly at me?

She swallowed hard. I look at you.

No, you look at my chest or just past me, never directly at me unless you’re behind the camera.

I think you’re exaggerating. She changed the subject saying, Let’s eat. I’m famished. She pushed her chair back and went to the side table. She took two sandwiches out of a bag. One was warm so she assumed it was her Reuben. She handed the other to him.

Tell me; is Blaze your real name?

    Some days.

    What does that mean?

He laughed. The first band I was in was called The Howling. We all chose unique names. Blaze just sort of stuck with me. But don’t tell Terry. He has no idea. I legally changed my name to Blaze a few years back.

    Seriously?

He nodded as he removed his sandwich from the wax paper. It just seemed more Rock God-like than Brian.

So is Hunter really your last name?

    Yes.

Hm, Brian Hunter. Yeah, it’s not very Rock God.  But I can’t believe your right hand man doesn’t know.

It’s good to have some secrets.

Don’t I know it, she mused under her breath.

What secrets are you hiding, Ms. Divine?

Again, her cheeks flushed.  She turned away and bit her lip thinking, If only he knew.

Are you a vampire or witch or something?

Those things do not really exist, Mr. Hunter.

Blaze moved closer to her. So now it’s Mr. Hunter. Did I touch a nerve?

Let’s eat and finish up so I can go home. I had to get up early on my day off.

    ***

After Blaze, Terry and Martha had left, Serafina remained in the studio. She decided to develop the film and review what she had of Blaze. As the pictures came to life in the chemical bath, she felt a twinge inside. She was breathing heavily and feeling intoxicated.

No, she said aloud. There is no way in hell you are getting involved with him. He is too well known. No, it is not a good idea.

Her mind was made up, yet she drawn to him like metal to a magnet.

She held one of the photos of the rock star in her hand. It was as if his eyes were looking straight at her, seeing into her soul. She ran her fingers over the picture. She sighed heavily and put the shot to the side for herself. She could always do another print, she told herself.

    ***

Sunday evening when he was finally alone, all he could think of was Serafina. She was beautiful though she had been modestly dressed, her hair pulled back in a haphazard pony tail. She wore no makeup and the only jewelry she had on was a watch on one wrist, a bangle on the other and gold studs. She was not the type of woman he was normally seen with in public. Of course, none of them were his type anyway. He preferred intelligent women.

Blaze had not had a real relationship in quite some time. He missed it. He liked coming home to someone he could have a conversation with. The ladies he had been seen with lately were more for show and sex, nothing else.

He removed the business card from his jacket. He drew his forefinger over the name.

Divine is right. You are divine, Sera. I think you are hiding something under that shy smile of yours. And I want to know what it is.

Blaze put his feet up on the coffee table and leaned his head back. He groaned and rubbed his crotch.

Um, what I’d like to do to you, Ms. Divine.

    Chapter 2

Monday morning, Sera was sitting on the sofa in the outer office of the studio.  She and Martha were reviewing the prints she had done the night before.

He is one fine piece of art, isn't he? Martha remarked.

    I guess.

You guess? Are you blind? Look at this one with his shirt half way unbuttoned and that come get me look. It's like he can make a girl's panties spontaneously explode.

No guy can do that, Martha.

I beg to differ. God, he has the most intense eyes and you have captured them beautifully.

Thanks. I'm pretty pleased with the result. I think he should have plenty to work with for the album cover and some promos.

Can I take a couple? You know, just for... personal use?

You're really into him, aren't you?

Blaze had just stepped off the elevator and the voices from the office rang in his ears. He stopped for a moment.

Martha nodded vigorously. But I think he was more interested in you.

I don't have time for him. He's probably one of those lay 'em and leave 'em kind.

Who cares? Sometimes ya just need to get down and dirty.

Sera laughed. You need a boyfriend.

Look who's talking. I think your lunch with Blaze yesterday was the only date I have seen you on.

    That was not a date.

Hm, maybe it was a pseudo date.

Not ever close, it was lunch with a client.

Then maybe you should have more two legged clients so you can meet someone.

How did we get on the subject of my love life? Sera asked.

Because we're looking at pictures of a fine specimen. Doesn't he make you hot?

Sera stood and said, I think this conversation is a little too personal for an employer and employee. She went to fill her coffee mug.

I'd like to think we've become more than that over the past two years.

    Coffee?

    Martha nodded.

Yes, I suppose we have, Sera admitted as she filled Martha's mug. But let's get back to business. You have Terry's number right?

    Yup.

OK, give him a call. Tell him we can have a messenger bring him some photos.

Maybe you should deliver them yourself?

I'll tell you what. Sera plopped back down on the sofa. You can hand deliver them. You seemed to get along quite well with Mr. Smithers.

    He was kinda cute too.

Blaze took a deep breath to clear his wandering thoughts and entered the studio. Good morning ladies.

Sera's head spun around. She practically spilled her coffee in the process. She jumped up from the sofa. Blaze eyed her. She was wearing black leggings and an oversized sweater. He wondered why she always hid her figure.

Mr. Hunter, what are you doing here?

You said you were going to develop the pictures last night so I thought I would stop by and pick them up. I, um, brought coffee but I see you're already set.

You didn't have to do that, Sera said looking down at his boots.

He had heard enough of the conversation to know how Sera felt, yet the fact that she tried to hide her blush said much more than her words.

Care to show me what you got? Blaze said in a low growl.

    What?

    The pictures.

Oh, um, Sera stuttered. Of course, we have some excellent photos. Martha, would you get everything together for Mr. Hunter. She turned on her heel and went into her studio. She gave the door a nudge but it did not close all the way.

Sera sat at her desk and turned the chair to look out the window. She inhaled deeply, trying to stop the butterflies from erupting in her tummy. It wasn't working very well. A moment later she heard the office door close then heavy footfalls.

Are you hiding from me? he asked.

What? Um, no, I have a lot of work to do.

He moved around the desk and into her line of vision.

So why are you staring out the window?

Because, Mr. Hunter, I have been interrupted and I was gathering my thoughts.

Have dinner with me tonight. His words came out as more of a command than a question.

Sera turned her chair around and said, I do not go out with clients.

That is because most of your clients are animals. His eyes examined her as he stalked around to the front the desk. Have dinner with me.

No, she said, unable to stop her cheeks from turning pink.

Your lips say no but your eyes say, 'Oh Please.' He placed his hands on the desk and leaned toward her.

    Perhaps you need a translator.

OK, if not dinner, then lunch.

    I'm very busy today.

    What about tomorrow?

    I'm busy all week.

Blaze sat in the chair across from the desk. I'm not leaving until I know when I'm going to see you again.

She blew out a long breath. Friday morning I will meet you for coffee at the Starbucks on Third at eight. If you are one minute late, I will leave. Now please go. I have work to do.

Friday, eight, Third, I won't be late. I never come late.

As he walked out of the studio, Sera licked her lips.

    ***

For Sera, the week flew by. She had photos of the dog show to review and send. In addition, many clients came in for portraits of their children or animals. The studio was like Grand Central Station, the door constantly opening and closing. Week nights, Sera usually stayed home. She would read or play computer games. That week Sera spent time looking for information on her rock star client. She found several articles, many pictures of him with different women, but nothing beyond five years. She even tried looking up Brian Hunter but there wasn't much under that name.

Time seemed to drag for Blaze. He was in between projects. The album was done, save the artwork. Thanks to Divine Photography, the cover was in the works. His tour would not start for a few more weeks. He was supposed to take a breather and head home for a few days yet he could not get his mind of the intriguing photographer. He did some of his own investigating. What he found related to her business which seemed to be doing quite well. He discovered very little personal information, not even a social networking account.

Hm, Ms. Divine, either you are a very private person or you have something to hide.

He shut off his laptop and put it away. He lay on his back and put his hands behind his head. He closed his eyes and visions of Sera floated through his thoughts. He wondered why she always wore oversized clothes and why she rarely looked him directly in the eye. She spoke with confidence yet her body language led him to believe she was shy. The way she bit her lip drove him wild. He could not deny he wanted her physically yet there was something else there, something... more.

    ***

Thursday afternoon, Sera was photographing a couple with their two golden retrievers. Martha was in the studio with her readjusting the lights and helping in any way she could.

I'll be right back, she said to her boss.

Take your time, we're almost done, Sera told her. She turned toward her clients and said, Did you want a shot of two of the dogs alone?

The woman nodded. I think we can get them to stay for a moment or two.

They arranged the dogs and managed to get them to stay. Sera snapped a few more pictures.

OK, I think we're good. Do you want to take a look at what I have?

Absolutely, the couple said in unison.

She popped the memory card out of her camera and they sat at the side table to view the photos. Forty minutes later, the clients had chosen their package and the portraits were sliding out of the printer.

This should only take a few minutes.

Once everything was printed and paid for, Sera walked her client to the elevator. When she returned, Sera saw Martha grinning from ear to ear.

    What's up?

There's a delivery for you. I put it on your desk.

    Who is it from?

    Go see.

Sera went into her office and saw the brown cardboard box. She saw the return address and smiled. Inside there was another box and a card.

    Looking forward to coffee tomorrow.

She removed the lid from the inner box and pushed aside the pink tissue paper. Martha was watching from the doorway as her boss held up the lavender silk blouse.

Wow, that's nice. I told you he had a thing for you.

Don't you think it's a little strange him giving me a gift. I barely know him.

Martha shrugged as she approached her boss. I don't know. I think it's kind of sweet. I mean, he obviously put some thought into his purchase. He could have just sent flowers. Oh look, there's another note in here.

Martha picked up the folded piece of paper and handed it to Sera.

Humor me and wear this tomorrow. B~

    Sera felt her insides liquefy.

    Well, what does it say?

She handed the note to Martha.

Maybe he wants to see you in something a little more feminine?

Already he's telling me how to dress.

No, he's asking you to wear it. It looks more like a suggestion than a demand. I think you should wear it.

Serafina folded the blouse and placed it back into the box, covering it with the tissue paper. She placed the card and note in the box, and placed it all in the larger box.

I'm giving it back to him tomorrow.

Even if you're not going to wear it for him, I think you should keep it.

Then there will be certain expectations, no?

    So?

Martha, I don't have time for this.

Me thinks she doth protest too much, Martha laughed. Wear it. She turned and walked out of the studio.

Friday morning, Blaze arrived at the coffee shop fifteen minutes early. He was not accustomed to getting up at that hour but for Serafina, he would do just about anything. He found a table by the window. After placing his jacket over the back of one stool, he sat on the other and gazed out the window.

At five minutes before eight, Blaze went up to the counter and ordered two coffees. He returned to the table and waited. Serafina came from the opposite the direction he was watching. His first sight of her was her backside as she walked past the window to the door and his jeans suddenly felt uncomfortably tight. He stood as she entered.

    Ms. Divine, good morning.

    Mr. Hunter, you're on time.

He gestured toward the stool. I took the liberty of ordering a latte for you?

He grinned as she unzipped her jacket and he saw a glimpse of the blouse he had sent.

Lavender is most definitely striking on you.

Thank you, she said softly, her eyes focused on the table top. She lifted her cup and took a small sip testing the temperature. She looked up and tilted her head. You must have asked Martha how I like my coffee.

    You caught me.

What else has she told you about me?

He smirked. That discussion might take us through lunch.

Sera gulped. She told herself to talk to Martha about her mouth.

Well, Mr. Hunter, I guess you have me at a disadvantage as I know very little about you other than you have been seen with hundreds of women.

If you have found pictures of me with hundreds of women than at least 87% of those were photo-shopped.

Sera took another sip of her latte. Perhaps they were.

And what else did you find out about me from the internet? he asked pointedly.

Not much, which is what makes me wonder where you came from, Mr. Hunter.

I could say the same thing about you, Ms. Divine.

The idea of him checking her out over the net made her insides squirm. He really was interested. Maybe he was a stalker.

    Touché.

So tell me something the internet won't reveal, Ms. Divine.

My favorite color is royal blue. I love coffee in any shape or form. I don't eat red meat. And I rarely reveal anything else.

    And why is that?

Sera glanced out the window. I'm a very private person. I have very few friends and I like it that way.

Serafina, you are a beautiful, intelligent, talented woman. You should share that with the world.

She popped off the stool. I need to get to work.

    Is it something I said?

No, Mr. Hunter, have a good day.

Sera turned on her heel and headed for the door. Blaze was stunned momentarily. Once he gathered his thoughts, he jumped up and went after her.

    Serafina! he called out.

She increased her pace and so did he.

    Sera, wait, he pleaded.

    She waved him off.

When Blaze got close enough, he touched her arm. She did not stop and he kept pace with her. I'm sorry if I overstepped my boundaries. I'd like to get to know you.

Why? So you can get me into bed.

It's not like that. I mean; normally it is, he admitted briefly looking down. But there's something about you.

She stopped and turned to face him. Her eyes met his. You do not want to get involved with me. Forget me.

Shocked once more, Blaze stood frozen as Sera turned and walked away.

He wondered what could have happened in her life to make her so closed off. Why was she so shy one minute then blatantly direct in the next?

    ***

    How was coffee?

I'm not seeing him again, Sera said flatly as she brushed past Martha.

He was a jerk? Martha sounded surprised.

I don't want to discuss it. Sera went straight into the studio and closed the door. She dropped her purse on the side table, removed her jacket, and then the blouse. She dropped the blouse into the garbage and pulled on a sweater she kept for when the office was chilly. Then she plopped down at her desk, and put her face in her hands.

Why did I agree to meet him? Why didn't I send that fucking blouse back?

A knock interrupted her thoughts. Martha stuck her head in and Sera glanced up.

I'm sorry but you have a client in thirty minutes. Would you like me to set up?

Can you give me a few minutes?

    Sure boss.

    ***

As Sera was shooting her last client for the day, she heard her cell vibrate on the desk. She had no idea who would be texting. She ignored it until after the client was gone.

Martha, you can head out if you want. I'm going to leave everything set up.

OK, I'll be here early tomorrow.

Oh, right, you're leaving at two. I'll try to be in early as well.

    I'll make the coffee.

    Thanks. See you tomorrow.

    Are you sure you're OK?

Yes, Martha, I am fine. I'm going to go home, make some chicken soup and curl up with a good book.

Call me if you need to talk.

Thanks, now go, Sera said with a grin.

Sera made sure all the lights were turned off then grabbed her cell and her purse. She locked the door and walked down the hall to the elevator. After pressing the call button, she looked at her phone.

Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to have coffee with me. I'm sorry if I upset you in any way. Mr. Hunter.

Sera smiled at the way he said Mr. Hunter. She tucked the phone in her purse and boarded the elevator.

    ***

A week passed. Although tempted, Blaze did not contact her. He thought about her daily and wondered how she was doing. The following Thursday, he decided to take a chance. He took out his phone and sent her a text.

I'll be at Starbucks at eight tomorrow morning if you would like to talk. I promise, no personal questions. Mr. Hunter.

He was surprised that she responded immediately.

    Don't be late. Ms. Divine.

    ***

He was at the same table when she entered the coffee shop. She smiled at him then glanced down. She perched on the stool across the table and took a sip of her coffee.

    Mm, French vanilla, nice choice.

You said you liked coffee in any form. I almost got you a frappachino.

    Love those.

    Maybe next week.

So you think we will be doing this every Friday?

Until you agree to do more than coffee with me, he stated with a smirk.

She placed her cup down and blew out a long breath.

I'm not looking for anything right now.

Neither am I, still, we can talk, right?

She nodded as she took another sip of coffee. How's the cover coming along?

It's almost done. Do you want to see it?

She tilted her head at him as he plucked his phone out of his inside jacket pocket. He flipped through a couple of images then held up the phone.

Wow, who did the graphic lettering?

    I did.

    It's perfect with the picture.

Flip through, you can see the inside of the CD jacket as well. That part isn't finalized though. I’m very particular.

Sera's eyes widened. Damn, I'm good.

    You are.

I'm glad everything worked out. When is the release date?

    November ninth.

Awesome, just in time for the Christmas shopping frenzy.

Exactly, that's why we timed it that way. I can get you an advanced copy.

I'm sure Martha would love one.

    And what about you?

For the first time that morning she looked into his eyes. His stare was intense. I guess I could give it a listen, she said turning her gaze toward the window.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Serafina was silent for a moment. He asked about her work.

It's been a long week full of cats, dogs, a couple of birds and too many children. I mean, I love shooting kids but it gets a little messy.

Blaze laughed. Sera gazed at him briefly with a dead serious look on her face then she burst into laughter.

That came out wrong; I didn't at all mean it like that.

He reached over and patted her hand. I know.

She glanced at his large hand over hers for a moment then pulled hers away, tucking both of her hands in the pockets of her leather jacket.

Blaze was taken aback. She seemed reluctant to be touched.

So are you working this weekend?

She shook her head and looked out the window once more.

I guess that will give you a little time to recuperate.

And what are your plans for the weekend? she whispered.

I'm heading to Colorado to do a little skiing.

    I've never been skiing before.

Blaze cleared his throat. Um, you could join me.

    I should get going.

Can we meet again next Friday?

Same Bat time, same Bat channel?

    Absolutely.

She nodded, thanked Blaze for the coffee, and left. He watched until she was out of his line of sight. He sat back and wondered what to do about the beautiful Ms. Divine.

    ***

Nine o'clock that same night, Serafina stood before her closet. She chose her clothes carefully and laid them out on the bed. She brushed out her hair and pulled it into a tight pony tail at the very top of her head. She applied her makeup as she normally did on Friday nights. Sera carefully picked out the right jewelry to compliment her attire. By nine forty five she was ready.

Sera parked in a commuter lot three blocks from the club. She walked the remaining distance. Although there was a small crowd awaiting entrance, the doorman let her in immediately.

The club was dark and full of the regular crowd. She went up to the bar and ordered her usual. The bartender placed her glass on the counter and tilted his head. Sera whipped around and saw him. She locked eyes with him. As she took a step towards him, he took one in her direction. When they were face to face, he grabbed her by the neck and kissed her ferociously.

I missed you, Babe, he growled into her mouth.

    Me too.

    Chapter 3

Monday morning, Serafina was still exhausted from her weekend. She had gone to the club Friday and Saturday night. She was in an excellent mood and couldn't wait to start the day despite her aching muscles.

When Sera stepped off the elevator she saw Blaze standing outside the door of the studio. Her demeanor changed instantaneously. She stared at his feet as she approached him. As she neared the door she looked up enough to see he was holding a frappachino in one hand and coffee in the other.

I couldn't wait until Friday, he said to her.

She took the frappachino and thanked him.

He followed her into the office. She placed her purse on the desk and sat on the sofa. He sat in the adjacent chair.

    How was your weekend?

    It was too short.

    It always is, he replied.

    Did you go skiing?

Yes, and it was fabulous. If you ever want to come, just let me know.

Do you have a standing reservation on the slopes or something?

He laughed. I have a small cabin up there. It has two bedrooms so my invitation is always open, no strings, I promise.

    I'll take that under advisement.

So, care to tell me what you did this weekend?

She simply answered with a no.

Do you have a busy schedule this week?

I have a few clients coming in.

    Dogs and cats?

I think so, perhaps a few people too.

Why do you take pictures of animals so much?

They don't talk back or get mean.

    But they can bite.

Sera shrugged. I have a way with non-humans I suppose. I have never been frightened by an animal. Humans can scare the crap out of me though.

Did I scare you the day we met?

Sera considered her answer before responding. I guess, a little.

    And now?

You seem normal. Of course, 'seem' is the operative word. You could be some psycho serial killer for all I know.

    I'm not.

Sera adjusted her watch and winced. Blaze looked down and noticed a mark yet he decided not to say anything to her.

So what are you doing this week?

I have a couple of appearances to promote the CD.

    Hm, that makes sense.

Good morning... Ms. Divine, Mr. Hunter. Martha was surprised to see Blaze. I, um, I was going to make coffee but I see you've already got some. I'll just go set up for the first client.

It's OK, Martha, you can sit. I was just going, Blaze stated as he stood. Are we still on for Friday at eight?

Sure, Serafina said staring at his feet.

Great, see you then. Later, Martha.

    Tell Terry I said hello.

    Will do.

As soon as Blaze was gone, Martha plopped down on the sofa next to her boss.

So, tell me. What's going on with you two?

Nothing, he just brought me a frappachino.

I told you he likes you.

    We're just friends, Martha.

Hm, he wasn't looking at you like a friend.

There can never be anything more than that between us, Martha. Trust me.

Whatever you say. I see something developing in your eyes as well. You can't deny that.

Sera winced again as she got up. Let's get things together in the studio.

    Are you OK?

    Yes, I'm fine.

Martha looked her up and down. You look like you're in pain. What did you do this weekend?

    "Nothing that concerns you. C'mon,

    Enjoying the preview?
