    Introduction

Our kitchen was too small. Too outdated. Too worn-down. The details we'd found charming when we bought the house had lost their appeal. Plus, it always smelled like the grout cleaners I tried on the counters (useless), and the homemade cabinets were overstuffed with the groceries and plates. We struck a deal; I'd do the research and planning, we'd make the major decisions together, and then he'd be in charge of the actual renovation.

Here's an ancient Chinese proverb: people make plans, and the kitchen gods laugh.

Okay, perhaps I'm paraphrasing. Yet Fortune or Fate did intervene, in that my husband picked up a lucrative adjunct job that consumed most of his waking moments and left the remodeling to me. I worked from home, with the kids
