Introduction
Our kitchen was too small. Too outdated. Too worn-down. The details we'd found charming when we bought the house had lost their appeal. Plus, it always smelled like the grout cleaners I tried on the counters (useless), and the homemade cabinets were overstuffed with the groceries and plates. What had been a serviceable kitchen in the 1970's was sadly in need of renovation in the 2010's.
It was depressing. It was sad.
It was time for a change.
Despite a nightly addiction to watching HGTV, neither my husband Carl nor I felt qualified to remodel just as avidly watching football didn't make us ready to play in the NFL. We struck a deal; I'd do the research and planning, we'd make the major decisions together, and then he'd be in charge of the actual renovation.
Here's an ancient Chinese proverb: people make plans, and the kitchen gods laugh.
Okay, perhaps I'm paraphrasing. Yet Fortune or Fate did intervene, in that my husband picked up a lucrative adjunct job that consumed most of his waking moments and left the remodeling to me. I worked from home, with the kids
