Reviews for Singing For Dummies

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I usually trust the "Dummies" series to provide a clear and simple overview of the topic being covered, but "Singing for Dummies" falls a bit short of the mark. The book is a bit overly technical in the exercises it offers to students, such that if you happen not to have the accompanying CD or to be trying to read without listening to the CD, you can get completely lost. A few of the exercises on the CD did help me begin to feel concepts that just don't quite make sense on paper, but they're not enough on their own to get you up to a quality singer without knowing how to augment them to develop your own practice. Phillips also seems to take for granted that one exercise on sliding around pitch will help any singer out of self-perceived tone-deafness, but this is probably not going to be sufficient for some beginners. There is too much assumption on the author's part that people are going to go out and seek for additional information (including private lessons), and little to no background is provided on basics of music theory. If I'm not mistaken, every book cited throughout the work is another "Dummies" book, which may be good salesmanship, but is just poor scholarship. Finally, as a sociolinguist I couldn't help but be irritated by the author's discussion of vowels and consonants (which is technically very accurate) with comments about dialects and accents that treat Standard American English as a more "correct" variety. This book may provide some help to those who already know how to read music and have a decent singing voice, but it will frustrate beginners, and if you're in the slim margin of people serious enough to make good use of it, you're probably better off just spending your money on a voice lesson.
